This kid is just as American as most of us! Sucks that ignorant people are questioning his "American-ness". I hope he's allowed to play for the Stars and Stripes and chooses to do so!

Wouldn't he be eligible for England in a couple years ?? He's been there almost 4 years so in 2-3 years he would have lived in England longer than USA plus his parents are there also. I don't know much on how the citizen process works in the UK but might be similar to here I'm guessing.

Non citizens with no family ties need to live in the country for 5 years past their 18th birthday. That, and England for better or worse, predominantly use English players or players with strong English ties (Hargreaves and maybe a couple of others being exceptions.)

Although I can see what you're saying...I guess the 5 years could retroactively apply?

Steven Goff, from the WaPO, has been on the Gedion story the longest. Good perspective here:

Gedion Zelalem has potential to join Graham Zusi and Gyasi Zardes as the third player in our player pool with the initials GZ.

GZ no longer on roster for GER. HT Brian.

Going from very confident to extremely confident that he reps the USA.

Yep. For me that's pretty much a sign that he will be granted his exception to play for the USA.

Anyone else see Leander's article stating Zelalem should play for Germany? His article was so way off base it was comical.

Yes....."[Zelalam] is the latest European-born Boy Wonder who happens to possess an American passport by some fluke of paternity or immigration"

I felt like I could stop reading there.

"If you look at it from a remove, there's considerable irony here. Klinsmann is forever telling his players that they should seek out the highest possible level of competition. Yet at the same time, he is trying to convince prospects like Zelalem to abandon the world champions for his own program, presently ranked 32nd in the world."

Damn, you guys will rightfully draw disdain from me, but my excuse is that he brought it up

Leander one time, when discussing the 2010 world cup, remember reading an article of his, and in particular the Netherlands, sai dthat the Dutch are too proud of a group, full of hubris, to realize when they are at fault, and will continue with a broken model.

well Leander your journalism is broken, not only do you not provide an objective detail, in your editorial like piece you produce poor poor poor reasoning

Klinsmann's counsel for his players are for the PURPOSES OF THE NATIONAL TEAM. Why would any suggest getting players playing at the highest level away from your program? It doesn't make sense, it's pure stupidity.

The only parallel one could EVER draw here is if he told Concacaf, once they decide to unite with Conmenbol (hypothetical here) and establish an American Federation (continental) that he would rather the two confederations stay independent. THAT WOULD BE HIPOCRACY FOOL.

It's amazing, at the very least, I can take solace in the notion that this kind of hyperbolic drivel is not exclusive to the idiots born in our country, seeing how he was an outsider. Maybe we should hold exclusivity to only citizens natural born for journalists. OH I WENT THERE LEANDER

Yeah a few years ago Leander stated that FIFA should get rid of heading the ball. And that long balls over the top should be banned. He was saying that everyone should play the ball on the ground...... and yet when Van Persie and his beloved Netherlands scored that great header against Spain( form a long ball over the top from Blind) he was celebrating like crazy.

The first comment on the article about his development occurring in England regardless of his national team summed it up for me. If any of you guys made that comment, hats off to you.

I'll take any chance to shower disdain to a faulty post. And since you explicitly invited it. . . The USMNT (and even the U23s & U20s if he gets dropped down) is a much higher level than the German U18 team.
