I'm excited he got his citizenship and looks to have made up his mind to represent the US. His time in the US made a positive impression on him...he wants to rep the US crest, that's a beautiful thing...and a truly American thing. Another big positive is him being at Arsenal under Wenger...that's pure gold for his development.

This...I don't get why a lot of the posters here ignore the role coaching plays in development. I am much more excited about a player training with Arsene Wenger than, say, Sigi Schmid.

Gedion Zelalem currently ineligible but United States seeking FIFA exception

Lame. I'm pretty sure FIFA will grant him eligibility seeing he was pulled out of the USA to go play in Europe

It was foreseen. That's why his status was going to take longer to gain eligibility.

I am sure he will be granted the exception. the kid lived in the US for 7 years before being plucked by Arsenal.

I didn't know that Tesho Akindele cannot play for the US for the same reason; however, Tesho meets the five year requirement in March. I guess that's why he was sent home.

Germany apparently behind the scenes fighting US eligibility as well. Will be interesting to see if he accepts a GER U-18 call up. It will have no bearing on his US eligibility, but will tell us a bit about his mindset. To accept, would simply tell me that all options are still on the table and the recruiting battle is heating up.

That's what I been saying with most of our dual nationals they treat USA like leftovers. If they can't have the best they know theres a plan B " not what I wanted but i'll settle with it " duals mentality.

It makes sense from a German standpoint to fight it. They consider Gedion as a top prospect going forward.

From what I understand Gedions heart is with the USA. Will he play for Germany if FIFA decides to not grant him his switch? Probably, but Germany will have a bitter player on their hands.

Anyways things should be resolved in a few weeks.

Uh, if he accepts the call up from the US and not from Germany that's a pretty good indication that the US is his first choice.

I believe if he plays for germsnys youth team while he isn't eligible to play for usa then he can never be eligible for usa. He'd only be eligible for countries he currently eligible for (Germany, Ethiopia, England?)

i believe that rule only applies to official fifa fixtures. and also if he didnt have full US citizenship at the time of being capped. he is not going to be playing in a full fifa fixture and he is a US citizen, will be eligible to don jersey in April.

i expect germany is just making their case. but he has always been pretty positive about the US and hes an american by all means - culturally, how he speaks, behaves. he played several years in US development programs, if he plays with the US he is one of ours. you can make the leftovers case with other duals maybe like timmy chandler, but not at all with this kid. he's 50-50 lived and played in all the countries hes eligible for besides ethiopia i believe....so could swing either way. the fact that the germans are fighting for him means that he's a talent.

Little known fact about this Gedion situation. The US youth program called him up to train with the U-15's back in like 2011(when he was living in the US) even though he wasn't eligible. Germany had no idea this kid existed until he showed up at Arsenal.

He lived in the US from 9 until 15. He had most of his soccer development in the US. Germany is trying to in my mind poach an American player that could literally help transform the USMNT. He is a US citizen. The fact Germany is fighting like hell tells you all you need to know about Gedions talent and potential talent going forward.
