v panama (gold cup final)
@ bosnia-herz
@ costa rica (WCQ)
v mexico (WCQ)

... 10 wins in a row is very impressive, but if you look at the degree of difficulty for each individual game, there is not really a super impressive result in the bunch (i really dont think germany B/C team was terribly motivated). id say panama is really the only legit team we will face in entire gold cup

my point is that the next 4 games provides a much higher bar with which we can judge the team and individual players

i suggest that JK be extremely critical of how his tactics play out and how individuals perform in these 4 games, because if we get good results in WCQ, we will essentially be done with competitive matches heading into the WC draw and Brazil 14.

also hope if things dont go well that JK and fans dont brush it off. these are the games, more than any others this cycle, that will give us important answers about how we should line up and who should be on the field

I think we should be able to win the panama game. No offense to panama but the us has more talent and I think donovan ej and bedoya are able to once again power us through offensively. My only worry is us allowing an early goal of a set piece we must defend extremly well on set pieces. We cannot give panama confidence they are a good team but we should beat them my guess the final score is 2-1 usa.

The game at bosnia herzegovina I think is a trap game I think we end up with a draw. If we win awesome but bosnia is very good at home and I think we hold out for a 1-1 draw. For the costa rica game I think we have chances to win it but I costa rica plays very well I also predict a 1-1 draw. In the mexico game I think it depends on if cheapo de la torre is still the mexico head coach. If he is I think we win 2-0 and we seal up qualifying for the world cup at 17 points with 2 games left. If he isnt I think its closer but we still end up winning 2-1. So next four games we end up with 2 wins and 2 draws which isnt to bad considering its a very tough fixture list.

This board is putting way too much pressure on the Bosnia game. Whilst I give US soccer a lot of credit for scheduling a game against a hot yet unfamiliar opponent on their turf for the test it provides to our players, at the end of the day it's a friendly.

The other three games are the ones that matter. I would gladly get embarassed by Bosnia if it meant getting a result in the other 3 games.

With that said, Rain the premise of this post is spot on. We simply haven't had this level of challenge over the past 10 games.

The one thing I disagree with is you said panama is the only legit team we will face in this gold cup. I don't see how we can't call costa rica, who we beat off a counter in the 82nd minute, and honduras, who beat costa rica, as not legitimate challenges.

And the result doesn't matter against bosnia. It's all about how we played. Last year when Brazil beat us 4-1 I thought the US played well and played the way we have been trying to progress towards. Who wins in the end doesn't mean anything. We played better that game than the wins against italy and mexico in friendlies.

Thank god others see this. It is a friendly. Results in friendlys dont matter. They are used for experimenting (ie bringing Brooks into the fold or Lando back in it)

just curious, did someone say that the result against bosnia is important?

friendly or no friendly you put 11 guys on the field, try to play good soccer, score goals and keep the other team from scoring.

at the end of the game you evaluate your tactics and you evaluate how individuals performed

for everyone who likes to constantly come in and say "results in friendlies dont matter."...

sure the results of one isolated friendly generally do not matter too much. everything else does matter. not only that but results in a general sort of way do matter, even in friendlies. every time you step between the lines, you try to win. winning begets winning

are we all on the same page now?

i say we beat panama in OT. A late Landon Donovan assist to Eddie Johnson seals the deal. (2-1) I dont know why people are saying Bosnia is a "trap" game. Bosnia are favorites to beat us, and if they play the players like Ibišević( played in the usa from when he young to about 20) and Dzeko, then it will be a very good result to snatch a tie in Bosnia. I think Costa Rica is another game where I would take a point and get out, espically after the ice bowl and all that, and then that leads us to the big Mexico game, and I think with the motivation of knocking mexico further down in the standings, and clinching a WC berth, we will win and win in some of the most convincing fashion we ever have vs Mexico. I think that is the game that will go down as Klinssman's big signature game leading up the WC, hopefully we can get a couple more of those once we make it.

so
usa 2-1 (ot) vs panama
usa 1-3 bosnia
usa 2-2 Costa Rica
usa 3-0 Mexico

This isnt directed at any one in particular, but it seems like since the group stage every person or announcer is saying (insert team name) will be the REAL challenge. Then when the US wins no credit is given and the next match is the supposed REAL challenge. Win the games you play in a tournament and you did your job regardless of who you play. As far as the upcoming games winning all three are pretty winnable. Id be more willing to make a guess once the roster is selected for all three games. I look for Arron to atleast come to the camp for the Bosnia game so that game may be more of an intro for young players who play in Europe.

These boards have turned into; other than 2tone, and actual writers like Bsherdder and Liviu at Americansoccernow, kinda sad representations of US soccer fans. What other sports fan base is so dismissive of folks who are new to the game? So "elitist" in the sense that "oh you havnt been a soccer fan for years?? you dont know anything." The speculation of how we would fair against "A" competition is so tired. No one knows what our best team can do till they do it. lets focus on what we see in front of us and how they perform. And ENJOY the this team. Which, right now, is pretty fu@@ing impressive and fun to watch. Most fun ive had watching since waking up at 3 am in 2002 to watch a bunch of players who i had no idea who they were, other than being "Team USA". Go America!

I mean everyone is playing down the 10 game win streak about how bad the teams we are playing are, which in all honesty is true, but then why havent we had win streaks like this for the last 20 years? the other countries in CONCACAF haven't gotten that much better, its still CONCACAF. So it's completely reasonable to have your doubts, but come on it's 10 games in a row

the streak is very impressive. have stated on another thread that dominating modest competition is part of moving the program to the "next level" and give JK credit for moving the program in that direction

the next step, then, is translating that to a higher brand of competition - such as the team will face over the next 4 games.

there are really people that have a problem with this conversation?

if someone wants to start a thread titled "JK and USA are amazing for winning 10 in a row" go for it!

this thread is simply looking forward toward "next 4 games". if you dont want to participate and want to bask in the glory of the winning streak, ok. do it

Maybe I'm missing something, but what are you talking about? Who's dismissing who? Except for a couple, literally 2, knuckleheads, everybody just seems to be offering up their own opinions, followed by arguments either for or against.

Also, I guarantee everybody is enjoying what they are seeing in this Gold Cup, but they also understand the competition we are playing. Its very fair to speculate how they would do against "A" competition because thats what you are going to see in the World Cup. If we do well in Brazil, that will be remebered moreso than winning a "B" level Gold Cup. Really, all it means is that we are not content with where we are yet. We want to be the best in the world. We also understand its going to take a long time. This is a general statement, but the problem is that these "new soccer fans" don't understand that. Honeslty, I dont even know who these "new soccer fans" are that you talk about, I can only speak from my own experiences. These are fans that are watching the US dominate in every other major sport except soccer. Soccer is arguably the most cerebral sport in the world. There are so many moving parts that only fans that have been with the game for years and years can understand, and even they dont know everything still.

We've never played 9 straight (about to be 10) games against Caribbean and Central American teams that didnt include Mexico. Usually we play 3-5 then 1-2 high quality friendlies (Brazil, Russia, France, Spain, Argentina) or play Mexico. Great to beat whats on the schedule but have to be realistic

And you're right I've been looking ahead at the games after the GC since the last round of WCQ.. god I hope JAB impresses at the Bosnia friendly

A big question for U.S. fans heading into the World Cup is surely on Jozy Altidore and just what is plaguing the young striker at Sunderland.
