I put Cameron with the CM's, so don't make a remark about him not being with the CB's.

Sure bets:

One foot in the door:

Orozco Fiscal: Klinsmann has given him opportunities to play, and he has been an up and down player for the Nats. He will have to have a very good year with Puebla to be included in the WC team( who plays him at RB). And yes Puebla made his deal permanent by the way.

Brooks: He has to choose the US first, but he has the talent to be one of the best American CB's ever. He will be a starter in the Bundesliga this season. For me, if he chooses the US, is on the WC team.

John: He probably should have stayed in January camp in 2012 instead of going to West Ham on loan to rot on the bench. He has the talent, and maybe Klinsmann gives him some chances before the WC.

Onyewu: Dude is probably done.

Bocanegra: Still has gas left in the tank, but if it comes down to him or Brooks I would select Brooks.

Hines: Had surgery in the off season, and still needs to file a one-time switch to be considerd. He also has been inconsistent for Middlesbrough the past few years.

Whitbread: Always injured. I wouldn't expect to see him.

Ream: He is getting moved to LB for Bolton. I will put him with the potential fullbacks later today.

So the 4 CB's I have going to the WC are: Gonzo, Besler, Goodson, and Brooks.

sure, if brooks accepts. but i would put that at less than 50/50 right now:

1) besler
2/3) gonzo / goodson - battle royal for RCB spot next week
4) boca

5) cameron (in as a CM)

6) orozco
7) everyone else

pretty slim list. hopefully 1 or 2 of the "others" step up

Does anyone know what is the potential going forward for Jonathon Spector, Eric Lichaj, Jay Demerit (when knee fully recovered), and/or Zak Whitbread to be called into camp for USMNT duty prior to 2014 WC? I saw the comment above regarding Zak's injury woes. I also realize the topic under discussion is centerbacks, but I have nonetheless included fullback Lichaj in terms of exploring overall USMNT backline potential.

Spector's versatility anywhere across the back line, plus his ability to play in midfield are very positive qualities. Coupled with his national team and WC experience, he could potentially further solidify the talent base Klinsy is building.

Lichaj appears to need a club transfer to somewhere he can play regularly. Perhaps just a change of scenery to rekindle his focus and spirit. In the last season or so he appears to have lost confidence in his game.

Demerit's international caps, particularly WC caps, could also help to provide much needed experience, leadership and on field organization. When fully recovered, he may have more left in his tank than Vinny Bocanegro.

Whitbread, similar to Lichaj may also benefit with a change of club scenery to a more dynamic environment. At least some of the word about is that he needs more structure and guidance than he is currently receiving, if he is to develop and reach his full potential.

In the interests of leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of assembling the best player pool and team(s), it would seem these warrant consideration. Will be interested to hear insights you all may have.

Lichaj has already made the move to Nottingham Forest. He looks set to either play RB or LB this season. Lichaj is not a CB.

Its a depressing list. Other than Brooks we've got a gap until the next crop of guys like Cunningham

I think Besler's a very solid legit International CB and am glad he finally got his chance after I had been calling for him for a while now.

After that it's kind of a mess.

I think Goodson's the better short term option over Gonzalez as Gonzo seems to consistently make a gaffe or two in each game he plays. On top of that he's very poor with the ball in the back and rarely makes a good pass.

I always thought Cameron paired with Besler would have been great and we never got to see it however given Cameron is no longer getting minutes at CB with Stoke I no longer think that's really an option unless he starts playing there again.

Brooks of course the huge wild card, who knows what will happen in a year... but he could easily make his way into a starter.

I like Cameron better than Jones shading behind MB, but there is little chance JK doesn't have JJ as a starter. Cameron absolutely needs to be on the field, and not at RB, so I would like to see a Cameron/Besler pairing. Brooks isn't included until he commits

So I have...

Orozco looks intense and very dialed in right now...he's really going to push the competition at the GC. There is a lot of pressure on Omar to prove he can mentally play a clean 90 minute game.

Besler, Cameron, Gonzo, Brooks (if he commits which I see as a real possibility since he is no where near the germany world cup team) if not brooks goodson

Why do people still think Cameron is a CB option!? He hasnt played there in over a year, generally speaking. I'm looking to see him start centrally in the midfield for Stoke, he was super impressive against a solid Panama team. It just looks like his natural position.

Omar, Besler, Goodson, MOF. If Brooks commits, Goodson is out.

if brooks joins US... could besler possibly play at RCB or is he strictly a LCB?

Edu and Cam had the best CB performance of the year. Most experienced, most talented, best athletes. But no one is mentioning them, because that makes too much sense lol.

Most experienced and most talented? That makes zero sense.

STILL dont think there is evidence that we have a better CB than bocanegra

1 match for chivas, 1 shutout - 65 minutes with 10 men

starting with bosnia match id want to see a boca / besler pairing

people really think goodson or gonzalez are better? cameron, who has never played a full season at CB and obviously has not played there since moving to stoke?

who do you think howard would choose?

Boca is still in the mix to go to Rio. You know how those CBs are. You never know when an old Tom Dooley or Greg Berhalter is going to show up on WC squad. There will be a couple of pissed CBs this time next year.

Nope I don't see Boca going to the WC.

My four:

Besler, Gonzo, Goodson, Brooks
