This guy has to start our next two games.

I agree, but what lineup would you propose? In the last Panama match they were the more athletic team. We either need to match them there or be a heck of a lot more technical than we have been.

Perhaps a 4-3-1-2 with Pulisic as the 1 in a free role. My choice would be

Horvath (had enough of Howard and Guzan and Rimando)
Yedlin, CCV, Brooks, Acosta (if Zusi can do it why not KA)
Bradley, Cam, Williams
Pulisic
Dempsey, Woods

Gotta be a 4-2-3-1, Williams can't be handed the keys to the car so early, he needs a partner. Pulisic at CAM.

hold steadfast to the idea that a 4 3 3 is our best chance

Williams Bradley Nagbe, Williams will allow both of them to be a little more opportunistic, have our flanks with Pulisic and the winger de Jour

I'm fine with a 4-3-1-2, 4-2-3-1 or even a 5-3-2 formation for October. A little concerned with our continued injuries and players not seeing the field (Cameron, Brooks, Fabian, Wood), but we should still have the players to see the necessary results.

I think D. Williams would make a good partner to Bradley in 4-2-3-1. In the others I'd prefer him as the CDM and shift Bradley to a more Box-to-Box midfielder shaded to the right of center.

Defense:
Shift Fabian to LB...Yedlin/Chandler @ RB...Besler @ LCB...Gonzalez/Miazga @ RCB.
Ream & Villafana as back-ups. (Cameron if healthy)
Midfield:
Bradley, Nagbe, Williams, Acosta, Jonathan Gonzalez
Attackers:
Jozy, Dempsey, Pulisic, Arriola, Green, Gooch, Zardes/Dwyer (Wood if healthy)

Unfortunately Bruce isn't going to do this. We'll end up seeing Dax, Wondo, Hedges, Zusi, Bedoya, Rimando, and the rest of the retreads that Arena seems to like.

and that is exactly the problem. I saw D. Williams play live for the nats I thought he played well, was fast, good with ball, never understood why he wasn't brought in more, actually I do know why, he would competition for Bradley, the problem with not bringing in different players for meaningless games is who knows how the will integrate and now that we are facing must wins, you are right Bruce will not bring in new people. its a shame-his hand maybe forced this time around though b.c of injury.

I think we take the 3rd place qualifying spot easily. Whatever results we need in the last two, we'll get...no matter the players or formation...don't drink the hysteric media Koolaid.

I'm more concerned with what happens to the roster after that.

Not that we've ever played sustain beautiful ball, but this cycle under Arena should be athletic and workmanlike...traditional American footy but with a little more skill at our disposal...Unfortunately, this is a salvage job under Arena...if he goes with a little more youth and skill we might do something unexpected.

Arena basically came in it to put the broken bits back together after the locker room implosion under JK. Imo, he's still navigating the roster...identifying who he can trust when the chips are down... which players have mental fortitude to claw their way into the game and not shrink away.

On that front, imo, the jury is still out on Nagbe and Fab.

So, it would be a good time to bring DWill in again to see where he's at...back in the day it was just just ok...not exactly great in the middle and poor when we played him on the flank. That was a long time ago, so I'd like to see his range and athleticism brought in.

My biggest hope to salvage this cycle is we play a classic American counter game and Arena brings in the suitable players for defense with speed who can close space and recover quickly and attackers that can get over the top with speed or quickly exploit flank space.

We desperately need to upgrade the speed on the current roster to play that game.

So I'm anxiously waiting to see the changes to the roster post Qualies.

And he's fixed the harmony right?

This isn't a critique, it's just an observation. If in Costa Rica we looked lost and totally won over mentally, we give up 4 goals, and at home, we looked disjointed, (granted we played better, but still defensively, just glaring mistakes) and we spot 2 goals. Home field advantage worth 2 goals and semblance of possession play.

What is fundamentally wrong with our team?

Petty USSF
Meritocracy is replaced by players repped by other interests driven by $.
No better players to push 28+ year olds.
College Soccer
MLS
One footed players who keep getting called into squad.
Grandpa LB.
I love my one mistake CB.
Lets not call certain RBs.
Zero midfield.
Backward pointing arrows from our genius captain..

I hope were not talking about Chandler in that RB talk. The dude doesnt want to play for us. Even if he is better than everyone and could challenge Yedlin but doesnt bother to put effort.

Always laugh when people say MLS is the problem because its not an exact carbon copy of their favorite top 4 league. There quiet a few teams that need to be held accountable though for the lack of investment in the league like NE, DC, Colorado etc. Those teams are not doing anything in the last few seasons to grow american soccer.

And just to be clear MLS isnt perfect needs alot of improvement stills silly to say it hurts american game

You could argue those teams are investing in the league by not polluting it with overage has beens looking for that last easy paycheck and instead giving hungry homegrown players a shot.

maybe but that whole overage thing is just about done. Kaka, Pirlo has proven thats not a successful route while Atlanta has proven the young DP route will make MLS much stronger. There will definitely be a hell of alot more younger DPs from here on out. Of course not named Zlatan which LA prob will get someday lol

If you wont buy an expensive DP then follow the Red Bulls and FC Dallas route. Heck you can be a hybrid like NYCFC who even though they brought Lampard and Pirlo they still managed to develop Jack Harrison, Jonathan Lewis and now last game is starting to work on developing James Sands.

I think Arena whiffed the roster selection for the last two games...should have brought in another playmaker and he also gave a few borderline players a chance to state their case. Then we collectively had a bad game against CR...uncharacteristic errors from solid vets and we didn't have any answers after CR minimized the impact of Pulisic and MB. Arena put a ton of responsibility on Nagbe and it didn't work out well. I think the problems we had in the CR can be easily dealt with. Panama away was always going to be a grind and we didn't have an adequate roster brought in from the start.

I think the fundamental issue is putting 11 on the field who have speed and are up for the challenge. We are clearly not there yet...can't have any passengers, and right now we have 2-3 that aren't close.

I think the last two games showed the roster and the locker room are 80% there...that's the issue I see.
