I think Arena whiffed the roster selection for the last two games...should have brought in another playmaker and he also gave a few borderline players a chance to state their case. Then we collectively had a bad game against CR...uncharacteristic errors from solid vets and we didn't have any answers after CR minimized the impact of Pulisic and MB. Arena put a ton of responsibility on Nagbe and it didn't work out well. I think the problems we had in the CR can be easily dealt with. Panama away was always going to be a grind and we didn't have an adequate roster brought in from the start.

I think the fundamental issue is putting 11 on the field who have speed and are up for the challenge. We are clearly not there yet...can't have any passengers, and right now we have 2-3 that aren't close.

I think the last two games showed the roster and the locker room are 80% there...that's the issue I see.

Actually there are some very good players who could contribute to the team. The problem has predominantly been Arena's tendency to give the nod to players who have more experience than young players who have raw talent, but lack experience.
Granted some of the young talent have only just recently begun to break into the club sides....But I'd rather see a young player with potential brought into camp than the same Old Retreads who have been a disappointment for most of the cycle.
When we qualify Arena will have to find a way to integrate these young/fringe players quickly to see what they can add to the team....Williams, Chandler, Saief, McKennie, Miazga, Wright, Johnathan Gonzalez, Horvath, Gooch, Green, etc....

We need players to challenge and put pressure on the "Old Guard". Players who have a hunger to make a WC squad....instead of players who feel that their place is a given.

Absolutely agree Dave. We need some speed and quality youth brought in to replace the slow and faint of heart....Hopefully Arena realizes the same...like to see him change out at least 3-5 players. Just cut to the chase and start building the roster for a counter attacking 4-2-3-1 or 5-3-1-1. We're not going to impose our will on anybody with our possession game...time to get real.

Dave, would you describe Chandler as having a hunger?
How about Green?

I'd also throw in Nagbe and Fab until they prove otherwise in a nats jersey. The alarming thing is Fab is healthy and can't find the field for his club team...not looking good.

mmee IMHO I see Green as having a hunger to represent us, just for whatever reason, has not worked out where he has gone to play.
As far as Chandler goes, I honestly do not know. I have seen enough of him in league matches to wonder what happens when he plays for Nats.

Fair enough, Dave.

Chris, even though I'm a Nagbe fan, yeah I have to question him after the Honduras game. But to be fair, let's start with the fact that he got stepped on at 38' of that match and he maybe didn't come out of that right, or... maybe he's a candy-ass.

I'm kinda bummed that there was no press coverage of the incident, or the fact that we had a guy who was barely playing on the field for so long.
The only piece of evidence that I have that it was or was not an injury is that Nagbe played 86 minutes on 9/9 for Portland after playing for the US on 9/5. This leads me to suspect that he shut down mentally in that game v. Honduras. If that's the case, I am fine being done with him, especially given that that stuff is basically why I can't stand our team right now.
However, if I think about the worst time I got stepped on, it wasn't quite enough to send me from the field, but it was enough pain to make me play like garbage to the point that I may as well have quit. It's a tough case to reach a conclusion on.

With Chandler it's hard to judge if he has a hunger at this point. He's been away from the team for such a long time that we don't know what he'd be like with our players/coaching staff. That being said, based on his club performances it would be worthwhile to call him in and get eyes on him considering how poorly Zusi & Lichaj have been. If he's a cancer in the locker room is the only thing I could think of for keeping him out at this point.

With Green it's a bit clearer IMO. He's had some decent performances for the USMNT, but for some reason has yet to get consistency at the club level. If he ever does get consistent minutes/performances at the club level than he should get a shot with the US again. Kid has talent, is still young, and could add something that many of our Veterans don't/can't. I view Gooch & Saief in the same situation. Pair a mix of these 3 (Saief, Gooch, Green) with Pulisic in a 4-2-3-1 and I think we'll see a more dynamic attack...something I was hoping to see during last year's GC before Bruce brought all the MLSers

When Chandler gets late on a botched play by Cameron or Gonzalez

Yes, that shows lack of concentration, but those were in Honduras and Costa Rica. Two plays in my memory where I'm like !!! DAMM IT FJ LOCKS IN DEFENSIVELY, WHY CAN'T YOU!?!?!

Then there's that play at leftback against Turkey where he fell asleep and had his pockets picked by the winger. But I mean aside from that, I don't see caring an issue. I think he's just dumb. Like Danny Williams quick start passing it to a defender dumb. That doesn't seem like lack of heart.

So the solution for dumb players is to put them in strict positions where they're just reacting. I think the Klinsmann era, sufficeth to say, made foolish philosophers out of our CB's where they're questioning everything. The mistakes our defense made, largely under the Arena era has been just outright.. "wow chap, you have massive deficiencies in your technique" variety.

Interesting comments by Danny, especially regarding MLS players. It is naÔve on my part to only think Mexico would use their home league players to base their marketing strategies. Almost cost them a berth in 2014, it cost us one for sure in 2018.
