Panama sent a strong veteran team to the GC, unlike the US and Mexico. Panama's victory over Mexico's JV is not a fluke. They can go far in the knockout round with the team they sent this year. I'd expect Costa Rica to do well also, given the makeup of the team.

Canada can pack their bags. They can't beat Mexico or Panama.

Not too long ago, it took a last minute strike from Holden to tie lowly Haiti. For countries like Belize and Cuba, they'll play the underdog well. Don't expect either to roll over for the US.

The squad for the US has a pretty strong veteran presence in my opinion...Panama is definitely going to be tough to beat, but I think the US is definitely the favorite given the balance of young talent and veteran leadership.

Clearly hyperbole was used. But C'mon now!

To say USA and Mexico wont be in the final is just so out there. There aren't any visiting south American sides, and Canada, Martinique, Cuba, El Salvador, Belieze wont be favored or even given respect against USA or Mexico. Honduras and Costa Rica certainly brought in weakened sides missing most top European players, and Mexico no doubt has a b- teams. It just seems so out of the realm of reality that both teams would get knocked out before the final.

You guys sound Like Magic John talking about the NBA finals after Miami lost game 1 at Home "Spurs are definitely going to win in 5...maybe 6" How did that prediction turn out for Magic.

Quality usually shines over effort in these long tournaments. Don't sleep on Mexico.

THe US roster is a different beast, with 10-15 players Hungry for a spot on the flight to Brazil and with a OPPORTUNITY to earn that seat. I don't see a let down for either of these teams in the quarters or semis.

Not saying an upset won't happen, but the chances are slim.

Mexico has time to get themselves together and I expect them to be in the final. They will likely be the 2nd team out of Group A (weak Cananda and Martinique??). And the 2nd team out of A plays the 2nd team out of B (T&T?). It will be a weak match-up in any way you look at it. That's 3 games to get themselves going again. They will be alright.

People saying that mexicos quality will shine through or is a lock for the final are underestimating how much disarray the team really is in. They have lost 3 games in a row to cruz azul second team, Quientaro, and now panama. They might be able to beat canada and martinique due to the talent diffrence but once the talent starts to even out mexico will face serious problems. Mexico can be upset in the semfinals even in the quarterfinals if their opposition play with the belief they can beat them. Trinidad has some pretty good players on their side Keywane Jones can score goals and I believe mexico will give him chaces to score with their poor defense.

Their coaching is making really bad poor decisions every game Cheapo has lost all the respect of the players. Its simple with mexico they attack from the middle give them space out wide let them try crosses they arent the tallest players. Also let their central defensive midfielder get the ball with space and make him create. Variables change this is no longer the mighty mexico they are in a horrendous slump and their b team talent is possibly the 4th to 5th best team in this tournament. In my opinion United States, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama or mexico is the talent level combined with coaching of the gold cup in order.

I agree with this order, actually. My point was just that the way the tournament is set up, Mexico will not likely play U.S., Costa Rica, or Honduras until the finals and Panama not again until the semis. And we all know what confidence can do for a squad even in turmoil. Look no further than U.S. after the turmoil of losing first WCQ and article about team disunity. They looked questionable in the blizzard game and down right bad against Belgium. But then beat Germany, Jamaica, and Honduras and now they are being talked about as the class of the region. They are flying high, but it certainly didn't look that way a short while ago. If Mexico were in a different group or had to play Costa Rica right away, then I would say they might get knocked out early (they still might), but they have a chance to get things back on track given the weak teams they play and the fortunate draw in knockout stage.

This EL Salvador v Trinidad and Tobago game has been pleasantly surprising. Maybe I'm bored but this has been a good game.

Seeing this teams attack just makes me worry for goodson and gooch defending. If they had trouble with Guatemala think of faster and more skillful teams

The decision to go with Gooch rests solely on Jurgen.

I really dont understand how Besler and Gonzo are rated higher as CBs than Cam. Besler gives the ball away more and Gonzo gets abused.

Goodson and Gooch are the best CB tandem in this tournament. I dare anyone to say otherwise.

Gooch looks a little wobbly, he scares me in the open field...Let's see how he looks against CR, that will be a good test.

Wishful thinking against Belize's Bunker D

............Wondo........Herc............

Shea.............Corona..............LD

...............Stu.............................

Beas.....Goodson........Gooch.........Beltran

Yeah, everybody hates Wondo, but against Bunker D, I'd rather see a forward with some height and savvy in the box. He reads the game well, he's easy to play with and playing with high soccer IQs in LD, Stu and Herc will allow him to elevate his game.

I want to see how Corona performs with Stu feeding him. LD at RM, he can push up high and cut in behind the forwards when the space is available. I know what Parkhurst has at RB. It would be nice to see what Beltran brings.

So, ive been out of it for the past 5 days or so and just saw that Castillo started at LW against Guat? Klinsmann and Vasquez can be utterly clueless sometimes.

Anyway, would like to see....

-------Herc--------
LD-----Bedoya----Corona
----Mix----Holden-----
Beas--Goody-Gooch--Beltran

My gut says Klinsmann will start Beckerman over Mix.

The only thing I'm hoping to get out of this tournament, is for Klinsmann to solve the dilmemma on the left side. To me, its obvious to have Donovan start there. But we all know that Klinsmann doesnt like to do the obvious. He likes to overthink the situations. With Mexico and Costa Rica looming in WCQs, does anybody really want to see anyone other than Fabian at LB?

Were you prefering he start him at LB? If so I guess you haven't seen the quotes were Castillo says he doesn't like defense and isn't very good at it.

Now with qualifiers if Donovan is called in then yes I want Johnson at LB but if Donovan isnt in then I am ok with Beasley. People have been wanting Johnson at LM and when it finally happens and the US actually shows attacking soccer everyone wants him to move back to LB.
