I was sitting around thinking about what the future of US soccer will look like so I started to think about our future 2018 WC Roster obviously way too early but just for fun. I keep up with everything that is US Soccer but obviously don't know everything so I am just trying it out for size and wanted to see what everyone else would think our team would look like. I know some guys deserve to be there that I have probably forgotten and some guys probably don't but just for kicks I am going to try out my squad.

Altidore
Shea Diskerud Joya

Bradley Corona

Fabian Johnson Besler Gonzo Lichaj

Guzan

Bench:
Hamid/Johnson Villareal
Okugo Gill
George John Danny Williams
Boyd Bedoya
Gatt Agudelo
Jack Mcinerney Ocegunda

Alternates:
Yedlin Cuevas
Sarkodie Wood
Zimmerman Kitchen
Danny Garcia

There is my list that I pulled off from the top of my head so I know lots of people should be on the list but aren't and some are on and shouldn't. I am sure Zusi should be on there and other guys will still be kickin it in 5 years but those are the guys I came up with. Now discuss....

I highly doubt Timmy Chandler will not be even on the team, much less possibly our starting RB.

Guzan, Bradley, Altidore, and FJ seem likely but its hard to know with something 5 years out. Injuries and age...

I stopped considered further than 1 year into the future due to being so off mark in the past with predictions.

I don't follow the young players too much except the keepers. Cody Cropper dude. He's going to be an EPL starter in the next couple of years. Guzan will have experience on him but Cropper is the real deal. Has huge potential and is getting the training that none of our past keepers have ever been lucky enough to have.

A nice attempt, and obviously some names missing from our foreign legion (Cameron, Gyau for starters) and a few of our U-17's looking to train and catch on overseas (Shaq Moore comes to mind)

This thread inspired me to go back in time and see what people were advocating for 2014 on internet message boards in the past.

I found one US soccer thread from 2010 that was trying to predict defense there were some interesting nuggets. Note that this was only 3 years ago, not the 5 years we're trying to project. Here were some of the suggestions for our 2014 Defense:

Edu
Agbossoumonde
Spector
Onyewu
Cameron
Pearce
Simek
Gonzalez
Goodson
Orozco
Opara
Bornstein
Lichaj
Franklin
Alston
Garza
Marshall
DeLaGarza

What does this all mean? Well, some of the names on that list are still very much in play for the 2014 team (Cameron, Gonzalez, Goodson) others are on the Gold Cup Roster (Gooch, Orzco) but there are also some names that people were throwing out in 2010 that look absolutely foolish now like Franklin. Can you imagine what sort of an internet riot would start now if people advocated him for the World Cup team?

Also the likes of Beasley, Fabian, Chandler, Besler were not on anybody's radar and now there is a good chance that these four players will take 3 starting spots in 2014. For that matter Dolo and Castillo weren't discussed either but to be fair Dolo has well outlived his shelf life.

There were a lot of predictions about Opara and Boss pairing as the CBs in Defense. There was also one comment that Franklin and Alston would be our best defenders in 2014 which is particularly hilarious.

What, no Freddy Adu?!

Seriously though, it's fun to look ahead at our younger core especially on the eve of the U20 WC.

What do you guys think of Junior Flores, wouldn't he be 21 in 5 years, I know it's young, but everything I read about the kid is he has huge upside.

Who knows but I, for one, always love predicting the team and keeping tabs on the youth teams.

The usual suspects (I think Agudelo has the talent to be a huge player for the Yanks)

I am also a fan of Mixx, Morales, Joya and Villareal.

Flores and Rubin look to be good prospects even if a bit too young.

Adu, Wood, Wooten, Gyau, Shea, Gatt, Yedlin, D Williams, are also all guys who either are or have been highly touted as talented players.

Bradley, Jozy, Fabian Johnson and Guzan should be the backbone and stars of the team, and I for one think at they point they could all be Champions league type players if they continue in their tragectory. I think Bradley and Jozy could go on to be legit Stars, even above where the likes of dempsey have been in world soccer. Here is to hoping and bleeding Red (Duh) White and Blue.

A big question for U.S. fans heading into the World Cup is surely on Jozy Altidore and just what is plaguing the young striker at Sunderland.
