Someone tweeted that anyone in JFK airport should see which customs immigration line Zel goes to when he arrives, will tell us whether he has citizenship yet or not. Common frequent travelers!

I said it before about someone else, but I guess it works just as well here...

I suppose we'll just have to wait until FIFA '15 comes out to find out his affiliation.

Joking aside, can we all agree that with the talent we have coming up, we don't need him? I mean, I'm not going to say that getting him wouldn't be good for us, but with the guys that we have coming through the youth ranks, we won't really miss him if he chooses to align himself elsewhere. That said, he's still young enough to feature for the youth teams so the sooner we can get him as a citizen, the better.

He is our #1 youth prospect currently. I would rather keep him and would be upset to see him go with GER.

I would rather keep him too, but all I'm trying to say is that if he decides to play for someone else, it won't be as big a blow to us as if, let's say, Jermaine Jones decided not to play for us.

Not to say others might not turn out better, but Zelalam is on another level compared to our other midfield prospects at the moment. Seems like this is a player you covet.

He's listed for Germany on the most recent roster update about a month ago. Darn!

Hard to say he is the #1 youth prospect when he isn't even an American, yet.

Its hard to know how critical, or how important of a get he'd be for USA until the whole class of prospects develop. If 2018 comes around and we have a midfield/forwards set up like

Stanko (Bundesliga starter)
MB Pelosi (EPL starter)
Green (Bundesliga starter) Jozy(EPL starter)/Agudelo (EPL starter?) Rubin(Bundesliga starte?EPL? La Liga?)

Then its not that bad of a loss as even though he'd be an upgrade we aren't talking about replacing Brad Davis or anything. Now if the other guys fail to deliver and/or get hurt and Zelalem is a top 20 player in the world, then it'd be a loss. Right now we don't have him and there are so many potential options (didnt even mention Haji Wright, Gyau, Shea, Flores, Yedlin , all of whom could be top 4 league starters in 2018)

I disagree. Our depth at defensive midfielder is better than our depth at attacking midfielder/center forward. K. Beckerman, M. Edu, G. Cameron, B. Evans, S. Kljestan, M. Diskerud, D. Williams could all fill in for Jones had he decided not to play for us. Granted, none of those players are as good as Jones, but the decrease in quality is not as drastic as it is from C. Dempsey to the next-in-line attacking midfielder. Assuming Zelalem develops into a quality starter, he could become the playmaker that we lack at times. Zelalem also gets some play on the wing, which is another position where we struggle.

From what I saw of Zelalem, he is a playmaker. He sprays passes around with many throughballs. Not once did he ever take a player on, or go into the box, or ran down the side line with the ball, or cut inside when he received ball near sideline. And he almost never played any sort of defense, yes it was a crappy opponent, but his other teammates in midfield were playing plenty of defense.

I'd say he's a box to box mid.

If he ever wants to be a box to box than he's going to have to take on a ton more defensive responsibility.

Idk that video makes him seem very Xavi like. Great passer. And that's all he's going to do with the occasional goal. But we need someone to unlock a defense with passing and through balls/ long balls. Badly.

He was actually played as a DM last season for Arsenals U-21 team.

From what I understand is that Arsenals coaching staff really don't view him as an attacking midfielder, and have been transitioning him to a DM/deep lying playmaker role.

He is more of a facilitator or Pirlo type of player. A deep lying playmaker.

That's only because Wenger ever since Arteta started playing DM for him 2 years ago and did well at it, thinks he has some new thing. Play a 4-2-3-1 and have one of the 2 DM's be a true DM (even though arsenal doesn't have one) and have the other be an Arteta type that just distributes, etc.

Anywhere else and he doesn't play DM. I think for next year Wenger is looking at playing Ramsey and Wilshere as the DM's. Neither of them are true DM's. But with Arsenal they play there.

If they were to loan him out this year, guarantee he plays a much more advanced role, even if it's not a true CAM.
