Villarreal continues to impress. Has made one of Mexico's top young CB's Hiram Mier look average in the firs half of LA V Monterrey.

This guy is going places. I bet he is in Europe by 22 or 23 years old, and playing for a really good club.

I think he can be one of the top players at this summers U-20 WC.

I think we have a few other threads on him.

But yeah.. he's good and is playing lights out right now. One of the big stories right now is how MLS is bringing a long some great young talent nicely.

People were skeptical how MLS is for a young player to develop. I'm really liking what I see from Villarreal, Gil, and Yedlin so far. I have no problems whatsoever with how they are coming along.

He deserves to have a few threads on him. He brings exactly what the USMNT is missing. I think if he continues his season for LA and has a good showing at the U20s he has a chance to be ni the mix for the september qualies

U20s have virtually no IMMIDIATE influence on USMNT selection. youth teams can help young players earn professional opportunities (club level). the one exception may be the olympic tournament

full national players are judged on how they perform against other professionals of all ages - CLUB PERFORMANCE ONLY.

players like villarreal get opportunities solely when they demonstrate they are one of the better players relative to every other player at their position. for MLS players this means, essentially, playing at an all-star level. for an MLS forward it means being near the top of scoring charts. if villarrreal achieves that this year he will get a call next january

the sooner people understand the USMNT selection process the less frustrated they will be

lol rainORshine you're right about the selection process. but yeah kid's a stud can't wait to see him on the field with LD playing regularly. His form should be excellent come midseason for the U-20 WC.

You couldnt be more wrong. Top US scorers in MLS were Wondo and Kenny Cooper. The year before Charlie Davies was the 2nd highest US scorer in MLS. He didnt get a sniff. Scoring goals in MLS doesnt make them USMNT material. How many goals did Aguedelo score? He got oppotunities. Same as Shea last year. Talent is talent. Scoring goals has as much to do with quality and team philosophy as anything else. If he's our best tactially for a wide attacker in a 4-3-3 he should play wheter he's 18, 22, or 27. You dont think he can be as good as EJ, Herc, or Zusi by the end of the MLS season as he learns from Lando and Keane?

MSantoine you make a great point but I don't think Villareal will be called in before next year unless he turns into an absolute stud in MLS.

Perhaps even invitation to the January-MLS/Scandinavian camp this year to get his feet wet but no callups with the full 1st selection squad.

Yeah I was watching the game and I like how Villareal is playing, he is a mini Robbie K. He is learning a lot from Robbie K. I can see him soon in Europe after playing the U20 World Cup. He show a lot of presence in the goal area just like Chicharito. I enjoying this kid and I hope McBean Does get more minute like Villareal. By the way Galaxy was doing great thru all the game but the F-d Up the last 10min.

listen, im not saying you have to be a top 3 scorer, or that if you are you will be a good USMNT player. i am saying you need to be productive

in 2011 agudelo had 6 goals and 2 assists in only 12 starts. thats amazing production.
in the same year shea had 11/4, which is extremely productive for a MF

if villarreal is productive over the course of this season, yes, he will get opportunities next year

Haven't really seen him play too much for LA, but what I've seen so far of the U20 WC team, he's going to be a force to reckon with this season. I don't see him breaking into the top 5 of the scoring chart, but I'm confident that he's a good player that will only get better over the next couple of years and if he hasn't moved by the time that the next Olympic team finishes their tourney, he'll get a move then.
