I am basing my selections off of the MLS season so far.

I believe regulars like Gonzo, Besler, and Cameron will be left off. All three will have just gone through a grueling, energy sapping WC qualification process in June.

So here is my CB corps for the Gold Cup.

1. George John, FC Dallas- He can really push himself into the USMNT picture with a good Gold Cup showing.
2. Chris Schuler, RSL- Physically imposing, good pace, good feet, and can make decent passes out of the back. Really high on him right now.
3. Carlos Bocanegra- Veteran leadership. Always good to have that in any tournament team.
4. Amobi Okugo, Union- It's always good to bring one or two young players in at CB. For me Okugo has huge upside, and the Gold Cup is a good tournament to possibly get some USMNT exposure.

All of these players I rate higher than anyone else right now. That also includes Seb Hines who is not a US citizen, and I don't think he is better than any of these CB's any ways.

Players that will be in the mix:

Gooch
Goodson
Alvarado
Berry
Soares

Hopefully Brooks will be with the US U-20's, so no I am not projecting him with the Gold Cup team. Remember the U-20 WC and Gold Cup overlap, so don't expect any U-20 players in the mix for the Gold Cup team i.e. Gil, Villarreal etc....

Hines hasn't put in yet for his National team switch as far as I know. Something he would have to do immediately to be considered for the Gold Cup team.

Correction Hines is a US citizen, but hasn't put in a onetime switch yet as far as I know. He would have to do that immediatley to be considered for the Gold Cup team. But like I stated I don't think Hines is any better than who I have listed.

Gonzalez and Besler are gonna be in there. Mexico is going to be our main competition and they are gonna put in a B-Team/U-23 squad in there since they have the Confederations cup this summer. They wont care.

Because of that, Klinsmann is going to put a near A-Team in there and try to win the Gold Cup. Gonzalez and Besler will most likely be included.

Think back to 2009 - We played in the Confederations Cup and put in a B-Team. Because of that, Mexico put in their A-Team because they wanted to win. We played Mexico in the final and got waxed 5-0

2011 - Winner of Gold Cup goes to the Confederations Cup. We put in our A-Team and so did Mexico. We lost 4-2 in the final.

2013 - Since they are going to the Confederations Cup in 2013, they will most likely have a crappy squad for the Gold cup and we will have an A-Team and try to win. Not only that, but CONCACAF is talking about having the winners of 2013 and 2015 play each other to determine the Confederations Cup spot. That adds incentive for us to field our near best for the competition

Is Chris Schuler really that good. I have never seen the guy play or at least can't remember seeing him play. Isn't this like his first year getting regular starting minutes?

I don't see any overlap with the May/June qualifiers and the Gold Cup. Otherwise those players will be gone from mid-May through July. There is no way SKC and LA will let that happen.

Ya I don't see that happening. Besides this should be more about figuring out some depth and seeing who can contribute rather than seeing those we already know are going to be part of the team.

I don't want to see any A team players or any that have a ton of caps...this tourney should be used to try to find depth or look at the young talent. We know what we get from Boca, Gooch, Goodson, etc. My Gold Cup CBs would be Okugo, John, and other young CBs....Hines if he files the one-time switch, just to get him in and see how he stacks up.

Would be just like JK to go all out to win a meaningless (for us) tournament

Jurgen should test the waters and give players shots to prove themselfs. John, Ream..maybe Gooch and Whitbred. Dont think Hines will switch.. Im sure we will get Gonzo, Boca, Goodson, Besler tho..

as mentioned by others above - likely will not be any "A" squad players on GC roster - zero crossover

Hines has said multiple times he'd switch if asked. It's not like we'd be ruining his chances to play for England. He's 24 and playing for a Championship side. Whether or not he's good enough idk. If I had to pick I'd say my four would be John, Okugo, and (pick two) Hines, Schuler, Soares, Whitbread, Besler (only of he doesn't get called up to qualifiers which would be a shock), Goodson (same as Besler and adds a bit of leadership), Soares, and maybe even a guy like De La Garza?

@rain Yeah bc everyone mentioned above is Klinsmann himself right... I hope not to see any A team players playing in a meaningless tourney, doesnt mean jurgen wont call up some of them..

@nick With the birth of a good CB pairing (gonzo, besler) and other CB options not likely hines will be asked to switch...also he has been less then average all season, no eye catching performances..
