All the more reason to get him in while he's healthy. Hopefully he can stay healthy for a long time.

If an option for the US at any position is a starter in the English Championship, we might as well follow another sport.

Yeah because Holden, Spector, and Ream have never been an option for the US at any position...

Moving on, Klinsmann wasted far too much time playing Bocanegra and Cherundolo, post Gold Cup was the time to begin preparing for a possible transition. Either they'll be on the roster in 2014 or they won't be, but in case they're not he should have been testing out their replacements, and there are half a dozen CBs who at least deserve a chance, including Hines.

I have an idea, lets compare apples to oranges!

Holden is a totally different position. He's played well when not broken, but alas...

Spector and Ream are both garbage. That has zero bearing on this Hines kid. And you don't see JK calling them in either, do you?

A Championship team player has no business being on the USMNT.

Spector was called into the May/June games but was left off because he was not 100% with injuries. So he was called in.

Ream will be getting calls soon enough.

The Championship is not ideal but there is a great overlap between the upper Championship and lower EPL. Hines has played in both the EPL and the Championship. Hines is easily good enough for the EPL, his problem has always been injury.

Middlesbrough are favorites to be promoted this year anyway.

the championship is a much better standard than the MLS. Not sure what Desi is on about.

I don't really go by the traditional formula that Player X is in a better league than Player Y so X is a better player than Y

It is an important factor but it's far absolute. Bolton were relegated but Ream looked good in the EPL and he basically was a starter within the first few weeks of getting there. Holden started right off the bat. Kljestan was really solid with Anderlecht and his d-mid parter is an Argentine international (and they played pretty darn evenly when I saw them)

The bottom line is that there is such a huge overlap in quality of players among the leagues that the whole equation is thrown off. The EPL is much better than MLS but that doesn't mean that every EPL is much better than every MLS player or every Championship player.

The only really way to tell the quality of players is to actually watch them. Look at their fundamentals, look at how they read the game and how quickly they think, look at how strong phyiscially they are and how fast they are.

He has been battling an ankle injury but got a goal this weekend in his first game of the season.

I would expect to see Hines with the USMNT by the start of the 2013 Gold Cup.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Hines/Cameron partnership for the 2013 Gold Cup with Chandler on at RB and Jonson at LB. Now that would be a fromidable defense.

For the hell of it here is a possible 2013 GC roster with a lot of youngsters.

GK: Howard, Guzan, Patterson-Sewell
Defense: Johnson, Chandler, Lichaj, Castillo, Cameron, Hines, Gonzo, Besler
Middies: Bradley, Jones, Edu, Corona, O'Brien, Williams
FWDS/Attacking Middies: Dempsey, Shea, Gatt, Altidore, Boyd, Pontius

Why not sit Donovan for this GC. it's not an important one, and I think bringing in young players and some inexperienced ones would greatly benefit the USMNT for depth.

You would have more than enough USMNT exprience with Bradley, Jones, Howard, Guzan, Dempsey, Altidore , and Edu.

Anyways this roster is based off of player performances up until this point. Obviously other players will make names for themselves this entire season i.e. Gyau, Holden, Diskerud, Wooten, Ream, Agudelo, Hamid etc....

And I just don't see Gomez as a long term player for the USMNT. He has already been relegated to the bench.

Now fully healthy, Seb is starting again for Boro... and they will be promoted to the EPL this year.

The US is not to set in central defense with Ream, Gooch, and Goodson all having awful seasons.

Seb is separating himself and he would switch to the US in a heartbeat.

Good to hear. Do you know if he has been contacted by the US yet in any capacity?

2tone: I'd love to see your possible GC roster, but I think there are a lot of veterans in your roster there that will not be playing Gold Cup this summer. With WC Qualification in full swing, Klinsmann has already hinted at using a "B" team at the GC this summer. Guys like Dempsey, Bradley, Howard, and others who will be in the squad for qualifiers need to be able to rest at some point this summer, which leaves them out of the Gold Cup.
I'd like to see a strong team for the Gold Cup, but if we want a health team for the last few Hex matches next fall we need to give our stars a break at some point during the summer.
