Like I said for the September friendlies, let old man Dempsey stay at home and rest because we already know what he can do (slow down the game with too many obvious touches).

Forwards: Johansson, Bjorn Johnsen, Wooten, Wood

He BETTER get a call up if Wood gets called up regularly and wasn't play. Hot damn, what does this guy have to do to get a call at this point if he doesn't get a call?

Naaaaaw, I like JK. I do agree his selection are a little questionable at times but then again he doesn't have the greatest talent to choose from.

Peoples comments just blow me away sometimes.

I am all about giving young talent a shot at the national team. That being said you want to leave our best scoring threat at home? Without Dempsey would we even have won a single game at the Gold Cup? When these other guys prove they can score goals in games that matter (not friendlies) then we can talk about leaving Dempsey at home.

We did fairly well without him against Germany and the Netherlands.

I'm not sure I follow the logic there but alright. Fact remains that our young guys can play.

They did do a good job. However, there is a difference between a friendly and a competitive match. Coming on late as one of six subs is a far cry from playing a full game from the start against their #1 players. I want our young guys to prove they can score goals in competitive matches. Doing well vs Germany and Holland was just the first step. You don't pull our best goal scorer for these guys yet.

And I wasn't suggesting we do that. I was just saying we have the ability to play well without him. Friendlies don't mean much, but if you're going to tell me that the World Cup winners, and an international powerhouse like Netherlands, both of which brough at LEAST A- squads to play, aren't trying win every game? Especially against the USA? Now I know you weren't suggesting that either , but saying friendlies aren't competitive is pretty implicitly suggestive of something close to that. These are the world's best players. Every game is competitive. And we played well without Dempsey for most of those games. Not just when we were scoring in the last minutes. We were threatening, we had chemistry, we had a decently fluid midfield.

I don't want to leave Dempsey at home. But if you're (general you) going to take Brad Davis, Chris Wondolowski, and Joe Corona over guys like Wooten, Wood, and Morris? Young guys who NEED to learn to play in "competitive" matches? Who CAN do that? I think that's suspect. After all, JK threw a much less experienced and unproven player into the fire of a quarterfinal against Belgium and he scored a goal.

Nice post! I think were pretty much on the same page. A friendly is competitive but players still hold a little back so it's not as intense as a competitive match that counts.. They are not going to jump on every 50/50 ball and risk injury, there are six subs, and both sides sub in some younger players etc. Morris and Wood have done well enough in friendlies that it's time to get them some minutes in WCQ games and work them into first team. I don't think it's time to drop Dempsey yet as we have no other proven goal scoring threats aside from Altidore who is pretty inconsistent. I am ready to move past Wondo, Davis, Beckerman. I thought you were supporting the idea that we drop all our vets and move to the young guys now.
