Its about that time. Everyone has had an opinion on what to do with the team, just like the coach has. These will be the first "games that matter". Many people are divided over the importance of the nations league.
1) it's a fifa event and the points go towards our rankings which matter come World Cup draw.
2) Mexico is bringing their best players. Their focus will not be on the gold cup this year and have said they will be bringing a B team to that event.
3) USA is finally going to have their best players. No covid excuses from clubs. No mid season club form worry issues.
4) it is a contrived event but the push from fifa has been more nations league heavy and supposedly will continue that way. Might as well accept it and go for the "title".
5) it's the last dress rehearsal for the A squad before World Cup qualifying in September. None of the major players will be at the gold cup and so these games carry extra importance in terms of development of the style of play and familiarity with teammates.

The first game is the semifinal against Honduras. Big game and one that I personally have been waiting for. It's a rubber meets the road moment for Gregg who has had lots of time to try stuff and think about what he would do when the games matter. He needs to get his player selection and tactics correct and beat Honduras and advance to the final against most likely Mexico.

I would agree. Let's treat the Nations league with reverance and try to win it. At the very least, let's let Honduras see our true U-23 team!

Most of our Euro players will still be in form from their seasons. Give them the Gold Cup off to have a proper break so they can return to their clubs and be in top form for the start of WC qualifiers.

Call in the fringe Euro players (EPB for example) and MLS'ers to play the Gold Cup and get a better idea about squad depth.

This is when we truly get to judge GB. I expect to win both games with the talent we have. I feel like anything less is a failure. I guess we will also learn if GB really intends to use Lletget as a starter etc. I think when it's on the line he will be a sub but I guess we will find out then.

There's no way we win both games. I think a win and a loss

Why do you feel there is no way to win both games? Do you feel we are not yet ready to take on Mexico? Maybe you feel we will underestimate Honduras?

As I stated before I feel like anything less is a failure. However I can accept a draw or loss in either game if we play well.

We haven't even had everyone play together at once. The tactics have changed numerous times. Tata is a better coach than Gregg. Their players have more experience.

I think the same USA players, potentially by the second time we face Mexico in World Cup qualifying have a better chance to beat them. I don't think overconfidence is the right way to think about this. They have to prove it first.

I think this is the appropriate time to argue about which players make the roster selection.

GB stated goal is to win this tournament. That said I think we bring in a few fringe guys-as we build our depth we need guys to be fire tested as Klinsman would say.

GK:Steffen, Horvath,
D: Dest, Reynolds, Miazga, Robinson, Brooks, EPB, Richards
M: Mckennie, Adams, Musah, Otasowie, Green, Holmes, Aaronson, LDT
A: Reyna, Sargent, Weah, Hoppe, KDF, Sieb

Im assuming one of Brooks or CP will be injured:

If Brooks is out I would invite: M Robinson or Ventura A; take out MM and add AL in-

Stand by: Dike, N. Gio

Extend invite: Balugon-

The 2 players I think could become important pieces on this team are:

Reynolds and Aaronson.

The questions for Reynolds is how much PT will he get at Roma-he is raw but provides more going fwd than cannon, and is faster, so while his defending is not as good as Cannon -he can track back-if he can get some regular mins for Roma-this kid maybe a surprise starter for us. (assuming my wish of Dest up the field)

I really think Aaronson will become an important part of this team, I didn't buy into the hype but have been watching him more and he seems to be getting better quickly. loved when he came into the game and had a good 1st touch and perfectly weighted pass to Gio , that he should have finished, that was nice a solid play to make just as you enter a game.

I agree on both counts, Aaronson especially. Reynolds should bypass Cannon, hopefully within a year.

I think aaronson plays nations league, and actually plays. He combines well with the other players.
