Being further behind the other countries and their players- everyone here in the USA- whether that be the kids, the pros, the coaches, MLS, they all need the time... just to catch up. Again, we did not qualify last time and are attempting to overhaul the system. That takes time and players.

With that said, to me (an average fan), the timeline has gone as follows:

1. Hire took too long and so we fell behind in terms of where we could be in terms of understanding the system.

2. Our star players then have missed time resulting in no real continuity.

3. Now the corona virus has taken friendlies and other games and time away from GGG and the players, for club and country.

4????? Where do we go from here? Is the starting XI an idealized version of GGGs system with guys who haven't run it yet? Or back to the same old same old? Putting whoever we want in our own XIs is all well and good, but their is no "first team" set of guys right now, nobody to count on if qualifying started today. Gregg has his work cut out for him to get this oiled and polished for the next competitive games.

All good points. The one problem for me is getting so caught up in a "system", like you point out in number 4 , is that you become too predictable. If you have superior players then your system should prevail, but we do not and no system is perfect.

A system should allow us to qualify for the next WC, but is that the only goal we have?

Yes for now, for sure our only goal should be to qualify for the World Cup. Once that has been achieved then we can re-evaluate our goals. What we need right now are small achievable goals to build confidence.

One thing that can't be said is that change didn't and doesn't need to happen. Can't fault Gregg for wanting the team to play the way he wants. We didn't qualify last time so doing the same thing would be for sure a mistake.

I was concerned before all this started, and so here we go. An informal straw poll of USA fans would most likely show that fans confidence is across the board, opinions are across the board, as well as expectations. Once soccer fully returns we will see how realistic everyone is being, including coach Berhalter. Not having something or someone to hang our hat on is a problem. Maybe we master the system and that's the star, or scrap it in a better effort to gets guys like Pulisic and Gio the ball more often without a complicated buildup.... whatever happens it needs to look and feel better than the current edition. The only player who has really looked up for the new system has been Jordan Morris.

What if we just call our best players and give them a chance to show what they can do?

We may need a national team coach to act like a high school coach in that the coach has to change his system to make the best use of the players available to the team. Put your best players in position to make the most of their talents. Fill around them with supporting players that meet the needs of the system you are playing and who can help support the weakest player on the field. When we have the number of quality players that great soccer nations have we can afford to plug players in to the coaches system.

I still say if we picked our top players by global standards we could compete with anyone today
We could field a team of top level and mid tier leagues if we took mls bias out of selection

I think talk to much about system and not enough, why the hell are players like Roldan, Trapp and Lovitz even getting calls

Well said! Given the age of many of the players on that potential roster, I suspect that they are not called up as often when games are against weaker opposition on US turf because the coaching staff thinks it is better they establish themselves with their club teams. All the more reason I wish the March friendlies weren't cancelled because I think most if not all of those players would've been in the squad unless injured.

First game back after all that Corona-virus bullshit, he gets a pass from me. Well see how he plays next week.

In a microscope Wes has bad touches and head scratching decisions, but he also was the best player on a dysfunctional team.

In order to get the best of Weston, he needs a solid 6 and 10 so he can have the freedom to hunt and track the ball at 8.

Also, until we have an 8 that can provide the motor and physicality he has at a high level, it would be foolish to replace him

There is also a question of building depth and competition. As we see presently, A.Robinson is out.

We need not just a first team but depth throughout the roster. Presently, there are no clear cut LB options besides A Robinson and Dest (out of position)

CB/s there are a slew of options, none great but plenty that are serviceable.

FW's are our question mark, as usual. So when think about the roster, considering the depth and don't have Euro bias either. Presently, there are no convincing clear cut options domestically or internationally, so be willing to look at all possiblities.

You can start the forward depth chart by who is playing at the highest level like the best teams in the world.

But you start to realize the gap isn't as wide as you think at least from the defensive side of the ball.

And need to perform, signing isn't enough. 3 goals isn't enough but after development then hopefully.

Lol I'm sorry, the gap between Long, Zman, Lovitz, Cannon and Lima and Brooks, Miazga, Richards, EPB, Dest and Robinson is as wide as I think it is.
