Morris until this year was a striker and good on the counterattack. Berhalter made him into a "winger" and asked schmetzer if he could play wing for Seattle. He did. But it's not his best position. We could go on and on but that's not the point. Coaching isn't just picking players it's building a team. And we haven't seen much evidence of that besides picking the same guys every time for the most part. And that's not team building that's selecting players.
I was under the understanding that he was starting to play some wing prior to his injury (before Berhalter became manager), got hurt, Seattle dished cash for Ruidiaz as a DP signing at ST, then in order to accommodate both Morris and Ruidiaz in the starting lineup Morris was shifted to the right.

Where is your proof for Berhalter instructing the Seattle manager to put Morris on the wing?

Go back to last January camp, that's when this happened. I've always liked Morris as a player but to say that his strength is to take guys on 1 v 1 on the wing and be a winger, that's never been the case. His best moments are always him attacking the ball for headers, him leading the break or running onto a second ball, in transition. Maybe he is being envisioned as a Mario Mandzukic type who can arrive at the second post but a winger he is not. And I'm now and have been a Morris fan and defender.

Morris used to player striker and Zardes winger if memory serves correctly in the 2017 gold cup for the USA. The fact Seattle (in a league with limited resources and cap space etc) won with him shoehorned in the lineup is a credit to them. But Morris is a striker at heart. I back him to try and learn the best he can but it's a lot of guys all over the field making the same adjustment.

There is still plenty of time according to earnie to get this thing right. No rush. And so we look forward to camp cupcake in Qatar this year where the system can take another leap forward. That's regardless of this games result. I'll play your game and support the guy and say the players aren't good no matter how they are played and more time should be given...

How much time is enough until get nervous?? Two or three games in the Hex?

Wait. How do we know Berhalter asked Scmetzer to play him at winger? Morris has played more in the wing as a second striker type than he has as a striker. He played striker at Dtandord. In fact he was playing as a winger in Seattle's youth teams.

Maybe Holmes got a call or maybe GB couldn't have been bothered to make a call. Maybe GB remembers when Julian Green was called in and Donovan snubbed for Julian Green. Maybe GB puts MLS players over Euro guys for that reason.

But at this point, he needs to recruit Holmes.

@2tone- the best I could find in my limited time checking last night was an interview from April about his position change. I'll defer to you as a Sounders fan on this- second striker I've seen him play alongside Wood and Altidore for the USA. As a pro he's been that, or striker. He would probably still be striker if Ruidiaz wasn't there. It's good he's gotten a year of practice, but like you said "second striker played on the wing". Yes I agree. But he's not a creator he's there to crash the second post. Here for the USA we want to create from the wing it seems it's a reverse of what you'd want Morris to do (attack through balls, crosses into the box), and instead asks him to take guys on 1 v 1, not his game.

It's not Gregg who insists on more MLS players, it's his bosses. That's been a thing for awhile now. That's not on gregg. It's simply that he doesn't rate Holmes like he does the other guys.

As for tonites game, I'm looking forward to hearing Marcelo Balboas take, he's usually very reasoned and calm. It's not about him, me, or anyone else. The team, which includes the coach, needs to show up tonite- and show up in a way that means they have made adjustments to the previous game and current situation. The game is due to have low attendance, and we've all gone over the reasons why. The team must do better to change the situation. Everyone involved needs a win- and that's includes us- who just want to see attitude and competency.

Just to add one more nugget, we are getting lucky Bradley got hurt. We finally get to see someone else in a "big" game. Moving forward can happen on accident too.

I dare say Holmes does not fit GB's vision of a system. If so, fair enough, don't start him. But from the minutes he has played with us he has had an impact and when the sytem isn't working you need an impact sub...I am sure he could do the job for us.

You avoided answering my question.

So just to be clear, you have no proof to back your claim that Berhalter told Seattle to play Morris as a winger and they obliged. That is a completely false statement.

And for the record, he started playing some wing before his injury in 2018. Look, I agree with you and have been one of the guys on this site stating that Morris is a ST, not a winger... but you're attempting to scapegoat something on Berhalter that just isn't true - that Morris is being pushed out to wing at club at the national team manager's direction - in order to back up your feelings that Berhalter is misusing MLS players and not playing to their strengths (ie. not playing Morris up top in his natural position).

He has no proof. He is using Berhalter as a scapegoat to try and verify his own personal feelings on the shortcomings of our national team.

No I have shit to do all day and don't work at my computer. I may make it back home before the end of the first half. Id love it to be 3-0.... in fairness we've started well. I'd love nothing more than to see everything work well tonight. I look forward to these games I'm not some jerk hoping for disaster. It's just not right now.

But why are you defending Berhalter? He's not a scapegoat (like Wondo or Chandler) he's the damn coach. The guy making all the plans. If it works it's his success. Right now it's the guys failure.

How much time is ok to wait to criticize in your opinion? It's obviously too soon for you I get that @lilshmike. But when is the right time?

No Sargent is interesting. Morales too but Gregg prob thinks Yueill has enough defensive bite with the splaying passes role included which idk
