I don't think people are ready for the very serious possibility that Tyler Boyd will no longer be called up into the USMNT. The last game showed where he is on the depth chart.

Nah. I disagree. He will be called up. I think you are overblowing that a tad.

Exactly when do you make a change to younger players?

@samtom- in many ways he has already- he just needs to choose more different ones now that we've seen some of the players the USA has to offer.

I agree with you, hamsamwich. And I hope we see even more different players. It could be an exciting era for US soccer where not only we have starters but depth behind on those players. The September games will be here soon enough. It will be interesting to see the roster then

Get ready for disappointment! The roster will still be MLS heavy. New faces will only be Holmes and Dest most likely.

As much as people freak out over Zardes, heres a thought: Gregg may not be as high on him as we tend to think.

The reason I say this is because if you look back at the GC, where was Zardes in the last 2 games? He started on the bench. Think about it - the two most difficult and important games of the entire tournament and Zardes was on the bench. Altidore got the nod in both, and If Zardes really was GGG's first choice front man, wouldn't he have been the guy to start?

Its possible that since GGG worked with Zardes at length in Columbus, his continued inclusion could be a factor of that relationship and going with the devil you know vs the one you don't. In a tournament structure like the GC, instead of taking a "unnecessary risk" by playing a less proven, less known individual whom the manager has had little time with, going with the "known risk" of Zardes at least provides the ability of the manager to adjust the other players around so that he has a better understanding of the "floor" of the team instead of taking a risk on having a high "ceiling".

Higher floor with potential lower ceiling vs lower floor with potential higher ceiling. This wouldn't shock me and kind of makes sense if you think about it. As I continuously state, this is a process that takes time, and time will tell. My guess is that Zardes will start to be slowly phased out and pushed into a pool player called into the roster based on injuries/form of our forwards to be a bench option.

Just a thought.

If I am disappointed than that will fall on GB's shoulders and our results. But ever the optimist. And even if MLS heavy, I would hope young faces. Trusty, McKenzie, Pomykal, Hyndman (not so young MLS players I am ok with.

Agree on Zardes. GB knows his limitations and appreciates his work rate when pressing...low bar but very consistent profile. He's strictly stop gap and definitely not the answer up top.

Zardes should have never been on the roster in the first instance. Should have been Sargent. And Nova and Wooten should have been brought into camp for additional comp.

How far in advance did they schedule this Mexico friendly? Is it possible they scheduled a Mexico friendly right after the Gold Cup because they thought "well what happens if we don't even make it to the final? Let's put in a Mex friendly a game after the Gold Cup just in case." Bewildering times we live in.

I just don't get where (in the future) how Berhalter can have only two strikers. Regardless of who they are (but especially if Jozy gets hurt, Again), it's very limiting. Can never throw on two strikers at the same time, and if one gets hurt you have no options. Hopefully as we move forward Berhalter learns he needs more options. The opposing coaches are good too and if you don't give them anything to think or worry about, it's a lot easier to stop.

Klinsmann's first game was a friendly against Mexico 6 weeks after that awful Gold Cup final loss to Mexico in 2011 that cost Bradley the job. So it has happened before. Probably limited options of teams to play with a lot of qualifiers and Nations League games going on elsewhere.

Depending on opponents, could always play Pulisic as a false 9
