I don't think Dest will accept a cap tying game.

Agreed.

I bet the conversations he has with the Dutch are along the lines of an agreement that he won't accept a call up for the USMNT and Holland will continue to monitor him for a little longer to see if hes actually got a significant, legitimate shot with them.

I feel like this will be drawn out a while (at least a couple FIFA windows) before we see a final comment one way or the other...

Totally agree - I'm sure Dest's first choice is Netherlands. But its way too early for a team like Netherlands to guarantee him a spot on the team. And dest is probably well aware of what happened to Jonathan Gonzalez after he locked himself in with Mexico. This will go on until he's knows that he's definitely in or definitely out with Netherlands.

Considering how early they called in de Ligt, I don't know why someone would say it is "way too early" for the Netherlands to give assurances.

Agreed he is gone. If he doesn't commit to the USA the first chance he gets (October) he is essentially saying the USA is his second choice. Nothing wrong with that IMO but the next question is, will his heart really be into playing for the USA if / when the Dutch determine he is surplus to requirements? I hope I'm wrong but if he declines the cap tying offer I think we need to seriously consider moving on.... If his heart isn't in it, that is ok but I'd prefer having players who really want to play for the USA not a second choice.....

Hmmm. I don't think he is gone. In fact those closest to him have said he likes how the US has been with him since getting callups with the U17's. The Dutch didn't show any interest in him until he was getting minutes with Ajax first team.

He's a young man and has the right to consider his options. But I would consider it a knock on Berhalter and his system and selections.

But this is Dest decision, if he takes the time and chooses USA. Then, great.

Not a knock on anyone. Decisions are based off of how a person feels. If he chooses the Dutch then I wish him luck and we continue to build our RB program with Cannon, Yedlin, Lima, Araujo, and Duncan

I have yet to listen to it but Travis Clark interviewed Jonathan Gonzalez about his experience as a dual national on this week's Top Drawer Soccer Show podcast.

I can argue it might be considered a knock. Netherlands coach, Ronald Koeman has no problem playing young players and Netherlands roster is pretty stacked.

And you have GB consistently calling in his players that have reached the apex of their careers realistically. Roldan, Trapp, Arriola, Zardes, Baird, Zimmerman (bad form) a young player can see this. GB got lucky and HAD to call in Cannon which you can argue has been his best selection.

Dest played in that Mexico game and saw how Mexico pressed and how USA couldn't break it. And Dest saw how GB didn't change.

This is Dest's decision but coaching is probably a factor of his

Completely agree, why would a young player with world class potential and ambition put himself in such a toxic situation?
