Wanted to start a thread discussing possible thoughts on what we would like to see changed with respect to USMNT and greater CONCACAF/CONMEBOL competitions.

In a perfect world, I would like to see changes to the CONCACAF League of Nations (LoN) and the Copa America. The current LoN format includes 3 leagues (Leagues A, B, and C), each league with a different number of teams, promotion/relegation between leagues, and only includes teams from CONCACAF. Personally, I don't like this as it only has teams from CONCACAF. No only that, but Copa America Centenario was a one-off competition and I would like to see it become commonplace.

Proposed League of Nations (LoN) format
The main proposal would be to extend LoN to include CONMEBOL
Teams in CONCACAF: 41
Teams in CONMEBOL: 10
Total Teams: 51
# of Leagues: 3 (Leagues A, B, and C)

League A
  • 12 teams in League A, with either 4 groups of 3 or 2 groups of 6
  • 2 teams relegated each term
  • Guaranteed at least 2 CONCACAF teams each term
  • Format with 4 groups of 3:
  • Teams in each group play each other twice
  • At least 4 games for each team, with home and away series for each team
  • Winners of each group enter playoff for title (1a v 1b, 1c v 1d)
  • Bottom teams from each group play to avoid relegation (3a v 3b, 3c v 3d)
  • Format with 2 groups of 6:
  • Teams in each group play each other once
  • At least 5 games for each team, with two guaranteed home games
  • Top 2 teams in each group enter playoff for title (1a v 2b, 1b v 2a)
  • Bottom 2 teams in each group play to avoid relegation (5a v 6b, 5b v 6a)

League B
  • 16 teams in League B, with 4 groups of 4
  • Play each team in group either twice (home and away) or once
  • Winners of each group enter playoff for promotion (1a v 1b, 1c v 1d)
  • Bottom teams from each group play to avoid relegation (4a v 4b, 4c v 4d)
  • 2 teams promoted and relegated each term

League C
  • 23 teams total in League C, with 3 groups of 6 and 1 group of 5
  • Play each team once
  • Winners of each group enter playoff for promotion (1a v 1b, 1c v 1d)
  • 2 teams promoted each term

Pros:
  • CONCACAF exposure to CONMEBOL, increasing level of play from current LoN format
  • Allows meaningful games to be played on a consistent basis (outside of WCQ) against better CONMEBOL competition
  • Teams who finish in middle of their groups can schedule other friendlies as they please

Cons:
  • Not exactly advantageous for CONMEBOL, as their WCQ is already long and they could end up playing a lot of games against the same teams
  • There could be a revolving door in League A with CONCACAF teams if they perform poorly
  • With so many games, there could be a lack of exposure to teams from outside the Americas, which is valuable when playing them in the WC
  • The increase in "meaningful" games could cause a lack of experimentation with player pool/squad selections, and potentially harm player development

Additional possibilities: Player age restrictions for League A
  • Have age restrictions in League A (like the Olympics)
  • For example: Under-25 restriction, allowing for 5 overage players on roster, but only 3 on the field at any point in time
  • Could add incentive to teams from both CONCACAF and CONMEBOL to take part as there is a unique focus on younger players
  • Could give experience to younger players who may not get chance during WQC
  • Age restriction only applies to League A, so that teams in Leagues B and C aren't handicapped and can play full-strength squads to help their chances of promotion
  • Could reduce risk of having the league be top heavy with CONMEBOL teams as the focus on younger may level the playing field

Proposed changes to Copa America:
  • Institute a standing Copa America, like the Centenario
  • Have once every 4 years, the summer before the WC, replacing the current Gold Cup and Copa America format (2 every WC cycle, the year after and before WCs)
  • Include 16 teams with 4 groups of 4 from CONCACAF and CONMEBOL
  • Use either current format, or the proposed LoN format, to seed teams

Format with current tournaments:
  • Include top 6 CONCACAF and CONMEBOL teams (based on FIFA rankings)
  • Include top 4 ranked FIFA nations between both confederations after that
  • Winner of Gold Cup gets seeded
  • Winner of CONMEBOL Copa America gets seeded
  • Remaining 2 seeds based off of highest FIFA-ranked nations

Format with proposed LoN changes:
  • All teams from LoN League A
  • Winners of each group from League B
  • Winners of each group in League A get seeded OR same seeding process as mentioned above

Pros and additional considerations:
  • Makes this a standing tournament that replaces the current Gold Cup and Copa America format, making those tournaments more important
  • Creates an additional tournament that offers exposure to better teams from CONMEBOL and a good prep for the WC
  • Great opportunity to generate revenue for all parties involved
  • Host in USA at first, then open up bidding process after 1-2 cycles
  • Try to work out with FIFA to make an official tournament, where badges are awarded to winners

Personally I want to see the US play more games against the South American teams. It would be awesome if they did something like you have proposed.

The final stretch of the English league season is upon us, with several Americans on the verge of relegation with their teams.
