If you didn't read Cameron's article on the USSF election, you better do it now. It's a must read for any American soccer fan. Here's a quote:

I'm not the guy you'd expect to be saying this, but it needs to be shouted from the mountaintops: The powers that be in U.S. Soccer have created a poisonous divide between the MLS players and the so-called "European" players, and until that culture is torn down, the USMNT will continue to slide backwards.

After guiding the team to arguably our best cycle in history (at least second best), our foreign manager was fired in place of an MLS guy. We saw MLS players get picked routinely over guys playing in Europe that were just as good. Why not try out an Alfredo Morales or a Danny Williams instead of a Dax McCarty? Why would Besler or Gonzalez ever play instead of Geoff Cameron?

Klinsmann struck a nerve with a lot of people in American soccer. Despite being a hero for us-and this is a guy who chose to spend the rest of his life here, to raise his family here-he was attacked by everyone around him for being "anti-MLS." He had owners saying this even though he played more MLS guys than Coach Bob or Coach Bruce. Heck he even had local club coaches publicly criticizing his tactics...something that never has or never would happen to an American coach. Klinsmann actually told people how it is, that we need our best players playing in Europe-and in the end, he had to pay the price. (Cameron more or less says the same in the article.)

There are comments coming out that Arena had a pro-MLS agenda. And now that the same people running MLS are running the USSF, the same people that think that it's good for American soccer to keep our top players playing at home even when they are good enough for better, this is a discussion that we need to start having.

How big is this divide? And which side do you fall on?

Jermaine Jones said it best. A 20 yr old in Europe is better than a 25 yr old in MLS.
If you're playing in the first team in premier league or Bundesliga you have to get picked over the 30 yr old mls guy.
If you're young and playing in the championship, you should be heavily scouted.

Ppl like Dax, Beckerman, Wondo, Omar had no business near the natl team.

There's no point in MLS even trying to develop players like the Dutch league does if they think its below their dignity (and not financially savvy given the current bizarre MLS rules) to be a selling league (develop a player or improve a player so you can sell him to a bigger league). MLS must change its rules and must change its self image/esteem in order to become a selling league.

Until there is the financial incentive to develop players, until MLS coaches and teams start caring about developing stars and exporting them to Europe for big transfer fees, the types of players that succeed at the highest level and lead our national team to glory, the mediocrity will continue. If we want to play like the best, we have to try to play like them. Yet all the MLS cares about is marketing. I think it's because the people that run it don't really know much about soccer.

The final stretch of the English league season is upon us, with several Americans on the verge of relegation with their teams.
