I'm at work. I don't need to though because advocating for a player to be on the national team means you rate them. We both have said Jozy is our starting striker so I'd agree with you there.

@2tone- that's assuming we do well at this Gold Cup. If so, they lose some importance. But personally I think the nations league is going up and the gold cup down in relevance as we move forward. All these "competitive games" are must win at this point. Nobody goes nobody cares and only the soccer diehards (and only some of us) will understand bagging more games to be good in the "future".

Why would the nations league go up in importance? the only way it goes up in importance is if Conmebol joins to form an America's nations league.

Basically here's the breakdown:

MLS = D League NBA

MLS has a marketing partnership with US Soccer = SUM

US Soccer Berhalter hired brother Berhalter

MLS made an agreement to promote the league through calling up MLS national team players.

Berhalter made an agreement to call up crew players and his old roommate Omar Gonzalez

We're all stuck with shit soccer for the next couple of years

reading post here is hilarious, you guys are so clueless. MLS is a D league? GTFO. MLS is a B league or a 2nd tier league. Top tier leagues are EPL, Bundiesliga, Seria A, La Liga, Ligue 1. I agree there is a current MLS bias for the nats right now but damn dude.

@2tone- well since they haven't had it before and now they do, that's already a start. The gold cup mattered when the winner went to the confederations cup but now that doesn't exist so what is the gold cup. My point is that if this watered down gold cup is "important" then so will the nations league be important. Losing to Canada and or Cuba or not making that final group would be egg on face big time. The truth is none of us know the plan for the nations league but the reason FIFA gave us is to have more important games and less friendlies. I agree I'd love to see Pomykal, Weah etc but will Gregg do that?

@lilshmike- on page 4 of this thread you say that Jozy and Zardes will be our strikers. Not sure what else you mean by that other than what you stated since it was before the roster was announced I'm going with that's your opinion.

You guys can dig out @blaise all you want but it looks like Jay Berhalter has a damn good chance of being the new CEO replacing the outgoing Dan Flynn. Some of this can't be made up and yet we are all told to "trust the process" or whatever cliche they throw out.

I think Lewis will get his chance as a substitute first and depending on what he shows maybe start. I still think Berhalter sticks with this first game plan of the traditional 4-3-3 rather than the inverted RB stuff, and saying that, Lovitz is a LB where Ream is a CB playing left back.

Gold Cup is, like it or not, our continental championship. Everyone at least in theory has access to their A side for this one.

Nations League is about getting the 25 teams not in the Gold Cup more games to improve, and even getting games for the Canadas and Cubas of the world who struggle with scheduling friendlies.

For us, say we crash out in the quarters in the Gold Cup, then win the Nations League. Are we really going to crow about being the best team in Concacaf? I know at least with the game in Cuba, we should absolutely play B team guys, it would be professional malpractice to send Pulisic, Adams or McKennie down to play on that field for a Nations League game.

@db707- I don't disagree with that. But will they see it that way? Also any chance to defeat Mexico is important but if they aren't bringing their best players this year then what does that mean? Every national team camp and game are important at this point we have bottomed out. Whether it's for developing players, winning the fans back, being regional champion all of that is what everyone wants to see. I'll remind you we won the last Gold Cup only to spectacularly crash out of WC qualifying. Each game/tournament is its own entity.

So for this years Gold Cup, in two days or whatever, these guys need to come out with their cleats on fire and show they belong because neither of the teams left in our group is afraid anymore of the USA. Now is the time to prove their mentality as we know the system is complicated and will improve over time. But meeting the opponent with desire and teamwork is the most basic element of the game. Let's see if that improves over the tournament and it's a start.

I know all these guys personally. You are correct! Dan Flynn has health issues.

Eric Wynalda was the man to lead the way but US Soccer is a corrupt entity. Wynalda was texting me from the election and told me he wasn't going to win.

He can be legitimately rated by MLS watchers of which I am one. We've been trying to make this comparison but it's been hard this makes it easier.

Unless he is injured, Jozy will be in the Gold Cup squad. As will Zardes.

My guess is that both Trapp and Bradley will be in the squad too...
@hamsamwich

What, this post? A post where I state guys who were going to be selected to the squad? I was correct, btw.

In no way does that state or insinuate that I "rate Zardes" nor does it show that I argued for his inclusion. It is a clear statement as to who was going to make the roster... not my feelings on the player.

Seriously, do better dude. You're becoming like bjelks.

You always pull the race card, think of something new please

Until US Soccer creates an equal playing field for management and player selection, I will not ignore the good ole boy influence.

We have an unqualified manager with blond hair and blue eyes that was hired by his blond haired and blue eyed brother with no interview or vetting process including other candidates.

We have a captain that is being picked over players in better leagues/ teams, has led US to its biggest failure ever, and have not even considered any competition for his position.

Our system literally apologizes for players that aren't good enough to be in the pool like Trapp, like Morris, like Lovitz infinite opportunities to impress after consistently bad performances. I could go on about the minority players that play in the good old boy league (mls) that get preference over better players younger players and dual nationals.

The proof is in the pudding. If you play in their good old boy league or grew up in the good old boy system, of kiss the good old boy ass you will get unmerited privilege.

I think it has a lot to do with lack of reading comprehension. I got accused of thinking Zardes is great too. I simply said that Zardes is the stiker in our pool who scored the most goals last season and deserves a spot on the roster. It is also true, scored the most goals of any us striker and knows the system already. I don't think he is great, but it is where us soccer is right now. Our other strikers need to step up and quickly so we have better options for world cup qualifying.
