If I were Bru.. err Sarachan.. I would have gone with D will as the holding mid. And allowed Weston, Adams, and Acosta to roam all over the pitch. Which for all intents, is part of what we saw, but when we got exposed in the middle it was when D will was unattending the midfield role.
This is why I felt lukewarm about Williams as a CM. Because he too, is a box to box. But so is Weston and def so is Acosta, Adams etc. I feel like a Derrick Jones type to cover for our flying CM's would suit us best.

For sure, because it should be noted that Danny Williams will be too old at the 2022 World Cup, so we need to start breaking in an up+comer DM now.

Watching most of the game I was impressed with (calling them "newcomers"):
McKennie
Adams
Miazga
CCV
Gooch
Acosta
All of them played positively and didn't shy away from things which was impressive and a good sight to see. It's 1 friendly so hard to extrapolate from that, but it was good sight to see active/energetic players pushing against Portugal and creating solid chances.
Thought Sapong showed well too.
Horvath looks like he's fighting things in his head. Hamid looked ok.
I'd like to see how Saief and J.Gonzalez fit into things when they have another intl break & friendlies.

If D Will is still playing meaningful minutes in premier league in 2022, it doesn't matter his age.
He's a dog and we need that.
I'd like to see Gonzalez and Mckennie deployed as dual 8s with D Will at 6.
Like this
----Mckennie---Gonzalez
--------D. Will------
I don't rate Acosta or Adams as wingers. They're in the CM depth chart and they need to get to Europe asap to catch up with the top 3.
Anybody got an update on Ashton Gotz?
Gaines and Gyau I rate as proper intl wingers with plenty of room go grow

Right now my best starting XI would be basically what I've been already saying. F**K Bruce Arena for not realizing his selections were garbage.
Ill sub Mckinnie for Tillman until we lock him down
I don't rate Ajo over Wood.
Wright isn't a MF.
Why so much disrespect for D Will

He is 28 years old. While injuries prevented some call ups and coaches not liking him for others his time is quickly passing. It is time to move on, he is fine right now as this younger generation grows, but he is the past not the future.

Wright can play on the Wing
My boy Johannsson is in a bad club situation. Wood is struggling ATM. Think he only has 2 goals this season

I tend to think Wright is more of a winger.

I've never heard anything about Wright covering the ground and defending enough to to play right wing.

If there's 3 midfielders he doesn't need to.
Even if you have a 4 4 2. If you have a guy vacating the space, then the RB RCM LCM even the LM can help out. It will be imbalanced, but you accept that deficiency on the count that you're getting something out of Wright.

1. Johannsson, I strongly disagree, he's not even top 5 CF (and doesn't deserve to be either). Wood, Sargent, Morris, Dwyer, and because of what just happened, Sapong. Dempsey also still ahead for now by default, I expect him in January friendly to go for the record again.
2. McKennie is not an attacking midfielder. In fact, he's a defensive midfielder.
3. Haji Wright has to be further forward than that.
4. Jesse Gonzalez > Steffen
Wright needs to be playing and seems to have fallen out of favor on his club loan.
Wood is penciled in. His knees continue to be issues and his club situation is not going to get better.
Johansson is no where near National team status. At his age he needs to be playing and cannot sniff the field
