I don't know about your main question, Rey. But to me, for WC2018, Nguyen is the obvious backup to Pulisic if we're going with a formation with an AM in it (and if we frickin' make it).

Even those other young hot shots coming up look more like CMs than AMs right now, right? Let's say McKennie blows up this year. It'll be as a CM, right?

I prefer Benny over Nguyen, Nguyen while probably more technically gifted never seems to fit in with the Nats, Benny-I thought has played well, certainly not a starter but could be a guy who could play 30 for us. I think his attitude is what held him back, but i felt the more recent appearances he was really trying and showed well for himself

I don't think Pulisic is a 10.

Think from what we saw, De La Torre is more 10ish than Pulisic. To me cp22 or 10 is like Hazard, a LF or RF. Not a midfield winger, because he neeeds the space in the final third. BUt those guys should be scoring the goals.

Feilhaber is, should no longer be conisdered after 2018, neither should Nguyen, emphasis on SHOULD.

We've had tens come and go and we've been reluctant to play them. I wonder if it's in our psyche to say a midfielder is a CDM or a winger. To internally always beg for the empty bucket formation. Instead of something in between. (Bradley/Jones dilemma)

Rey, I think we're up against several competing problems here, and one of them will break with the next coach, I hope.

I think it boils down to this for 2018 WC:
If not Puli, who, and what is our counter-attacking shape? You run through all the combinations and you come back to Puli. Arena picks a 4-4-1-1 (which he pretends to the press is a 4-2-3-1 as if we're not pinned back all day).
I'd pick a 5-3-1-1, but I'll post on that in the other thread.
