Lalas' rant was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

He's all about fucking contrived gimmicks. Swear he's incapable of being genuine or expressing real thoughts and emotions.

Those were his real thoughts. Hell that's pretty much what most of us are saying right now in Sep Qual thread

Normally I have no time for Lalas...I liked him as a player but otherwise he seems a self serving d-bag. However for the most part he is right.

The only problem I have is his criticism of Pulisic...he got kicked around the pitch the CR match and needed some protection by his teammates through retaliation.

His way of expressing his thoughts might reflect his real opinion on the whole, shoot I'm right there with y'all. Somebody on that team needs to sack up and play like they give a shit. However, I can't be the only one who can see right through Lalas' b.s. delivery... It is absolutely fake as hell.

Do we think it's because the guys on the team don't care?

Or is it that they really are lost, tactically?

Typically I have just stopped by the forums, but I can't help myself on this one, so pardon my rant:

Full transparency, I had little respect for Lalas as a player and have an even lesser opinion of him as a commentator.

Also, I have never understood former players waxing philosophical on matters like this. Was current player X really thinking: "Oh, I thought we were doing great, but Lalas has a fair point" or "Gosh, Alexi is right, what are we doing."

That said, it is his right. He is also employed as a commentator, so some might say it is job, but...

1) Tattooed? Really? Aesthetic preferences aside, it is not as if Lalas' appearance was conservative in his day. So what is the relevance?

2) Millionaires? - Maybe, but not directly from playing for the USMNT. The implication is that they lack the blue-color work ethic of prior teams, but Germany, Spain, France, etc. do ok fielding millionaires.

3) Cameron and Howard played poorly. Agreed. That's not a secret or news. Some will always make excuses, but how was that helpful?

4) Dempsey not a leader? Does he know that? Is Dempsey being disruptive? Other than, I suppose, the results, what indication is there that he is failing as this responsibility.

4) Pulisic - his criticism is he is not relevant enough to criticize? From what I have seen, Puli didn't give himself a nickname or present himself as anything other than relatively humble and a good teammate. Again, maybe there are things Lalas knows, I don't.

Anyway, sure, if you care about the team, you watch them have poor results, I guess it's psychically satisfying to have someone scold the players on TV, but if I took myself as seriously as Lalas appears to, and had that forum, I would be embarrassed that, that is the best "analysis" I could muster.

Does anybody really listen to Lalas?

I can't believe this is a thing.

A desperate attempt to gain attention and try to convince newbs he's relevant. The setup was so fake and stilted...cue Lalas to say something ridiculous and stupid to create a faux buzz.

He leads the parade of our over reactionary US soccer media. The sky is falling....wait no it's not...no wait, Arena doesn't have the answers...the team is lifeless, we're doomed....hold on, we just crushed Panama at home, we're good.

Not really, but IMO the message had to be sent so it really doesn't matter who said it.
If we crush Panama so what...we still have to win away to guarantee third...something we have failed to do in the hex.

The hex we have only won one game in qualifying onnthe road. Amd that was against the power house of Antigua. What a mess this group is. No need to lay the blame at individuals it is on everybody.

It sounds like he had a prime opportunity to deliver a real rant, and he failed at doing so.
It's like the basic premise was there: "we're too soft and content", but all the actual sentences were bullcrap.
Good post boirte

Also, I don't think I'll say "ok never mind, we're good" again until we either exit a WC group again, or come in first in WCQ, or do something big at Confed Cup or Copa America. Until then, we are not good.

I am also one of the gloomiest people on these boards, so take it as you will, but I'm disgusted with a third of our players and our coach. I promised you guys that just because I hated JK and I was a LAG fan, it did not mean I would give Arena a free pass. Here's your proof.

I had a little respect for Lalas as a player back in the early 90's, but that dried up by 98 when the team imploded. When he was the GM for the Galaxy was when I lost the last iota of faith in anything he says. As for his Commentating & Analysis I turn him off whenever he opens his mouth. He provides no insight, spews canned comments, and waffles from day to day. He's one of the biggest hype engines in the US media...kissing the ass of players/coaches one week, than flipping the script and sh!tting on them the next.

Lalas & Twellman are 2 of the worst talking heads I've ever endured. I wish both would be removed from all commentary/analysis of US Soccer (USMNT & MLS). Would greatly improve fan's enjoyment of the games.

Yeah this is basically how I feel. Obviously the team needs to nut up and play with some passion but Lalas inst the dude to ignite the flames. He just does it to do it.

Also Lalas wishes he could come close to Twellman in terms of commentary.

Someone needs to be criticizing the team. We're good enough now that we should expect more from the media than just cheerleading, which is usually all we get. If we play poorly, the team should be criticized, and this is the worst Hex we've had since the 80's, so some criticism is definitely merited. Lalas may be an inarticulate idiot, but he's the face of the American soccer media (isn't that frightening?), so he had to do it. In its ridiculousness, it probably generated some extra buzz, which was the intention. I think we all have to remember that we're still at the point where (barring maybe criminality) any publicity for the USMNT is good publicity. The last sentence was actually really funny. So all in all, it was a success, and I'm glad he did it, no matter how cringeworthy it was.
