First friendly I would call in alot of U20 and U23 players (that play for there club in a good level) to send a message to the full national that the last cycle was unacceptable and to looks for better options, build a play style that can last me for years with youth.

Tyler Adams
Weston Mckennie
Jonathan Gonzalez
Justen Glad
Matt Miazga
Christian Pulisic

Reason for calling these kids is they have shown the mentally to be fearless by breaking into their respective first teams despite their age and making a difference. IN addition there player have the kind of grit that has died in us.

In addition I would call these players to fill the roster to start building some kind of team.

Strikers:
Haji Wright - If he can continue to get game in 2.Bundesliga
Jordan Morris
Bobby Wood
Jozy Altidore

Midfield:
Sebastian Lleget - Comes back the way he was before injury
Kellyn Acosta
Emerson Hyndman - Can break into some minutes whether with the cherries or some other team.
Paul Arriola
Brooks Lennon - Stay in RSL to get mins or moves away from Liverpool
Rusell Canouse
Michael Bradley
Jonathan Lewis - if he can continue to break into NYCFC

Defense:
Desevio Payne - Get more minutes in the Dutch league or Matt Polster
Deandre Yedlin
CCV - Can get more consistent minutes in the Championship
EPB - Get more mins with SKC or moves abroad for more mins
Brandon Vincent
Greg Garza

John Brooks

GK:
Brad Guzan
Ethan Horvath
Bill Hamid/Tim Melia

Players that havent made and impact or havent played pro mins
Djordje Mihailovic
James Sands
Andrew Carleton
nick taitague
Josh Sargent
matthew olosunde
Kyle Scott
Joshua Perez
Lynden Gooch

I wouldnt go that far but we need to start helping some veterans into retirement. Guys who have a less than 5% chance of being helpful for 2022: Howard, Zusi, Omar, Beasley, Bedoya, Jones, Dempsey, Wondo, Fab should be done. Keep bringing in Nagbe, Cameron, Bradley, Jozy for now as the veteran leaders and to make young players push for spots.

2nd step is to rotate the young players. Give players a couple of runs (2-3 international breaks) and then try someone else. The goal is being ready for 2020. That gives 18-24 months to try things out. Give CCV a couple of games with Cam and Brooks. Then give EPB a few turns. Same in midfield. Give McKinnie some games with Bradley, then some with Acosta, then give Cannouse a couple, etc.

The winter of 2018 and all of 2019 should be about finding guys that can help in late 2020 (only must win game will be a confed playoff if we dont win 2019 gold cup).

Its not about winning every friendly, its about getting the best team ready to play come the hex.

I agree on the long term but I would in the beginning. You dont lose anything calling young players after the world cup and gives some of the veterans rest. I could less about friendlies post world cup we need to get younger.

Imo this isnt even about the 2022 world cup this is about the 2026 world cup. Thats our world cup, thats where we take the next step and announce to the world that the US is ready to be world class. That the world cup where imo we should be in a semifinal or Final. Lofty ambitions yes but if we build now and add pieces on the way it can be attainable imo

After the 2018 WC, and a New manager is hired, there should be a fairly significant shift in the player pool...

I expect that the following players will formally Retire from international play right after we're done with the 2018 Cycle: Howard, Demspey, Beasley, Rimando, Cameron, Jones, Beckerman, Wondo, Orozco, Evans, Feilhaber, Kljestan

Bradley, Fabian, Jozy, Besler, Gonzalez, Chandler, Villafana, Ream Williams, Lichaj, Bedoya, & Zusi will likely stay in the picture for the 2019 Gold Cup as veteran leader/options before being phased out.

Core of the 2022 Cycle will revolve around: Pulisic, Wood, Yedlin, Brooks, Acosta, Arriola, Lletget, Nagbe, Miazga, & Horvath.

McKennie, Gooch, CCV, EPB, Glad, Saief, Wright, Weah, Fossey, Olosunde, Perez, Scott, Lennon, Akale, Adams, Jones, Canouse, Payne, Sargent, Carleton, Steffen, Robinson, Farfan, Lima, Johnathan Gonzalez, & Jessie Gonzalez will start to become integrated into the team.

I'm sure I've forgotten players....and there are always going to be those who'll pop up unexpectedly. Now a lot will depend on who they hire as the manager, and how they want to structure the team.

The young soccer careers of Rubio Rubin and Brady Scott are headed in completely opposite directions.
