I get the comparison. But Gooch failed to make U20s.

Mckennie is a 17 year old. Also it seems as though Gooch was a tweener.

And of course, Schalke's herald isn't the same as Sunderland.

Can't really take Gooch being left off the U20 squad as to much of a knock on his abilities. He was seen as a 2nd forward and was in direct competition with Rubin & Tall (both of which were lighting it up at the time). Yes, he is a bet of a tweener....being able to play multiple position can be an asset, but it can also be a drawback.

The Schalke coach seems to like McKennie so hopefully he'll continue to get chances this season and continue his growth. After 2018 there is going to be a number of midfield options: at CM....McKennie, Hyndmann, Gooch, Scott, De La Torre,
at CDM...Canouse, Stanko, Arce. I just don't expect to see much of these guys until after the 2018 WC as Bruce is known to prefer veterans.

I don't expect to see many of those players to be honest. Tyler Adams, Mckennie, Sean Davis, Hyndman, Derrick Jones are the players that interest me the most. Nagbe will be apart of that CM corps as well.

Lyndon Gooch is more of an attacking option on the wings.

Gooch got left off the roster at 19, partly because of Sunderland being able to accomodate, mostly because Ramos didn't value him.

McKennie got put on even after Schalke told them they'd rather not let them go, lol.

I don't see similitude in their styles either. I would love both to be included into the national fold.

I have to add Johnathan Gonzales to that list. In fact it seems Bruce Arena has already been in contact with Gonzales.

They must have some serious trust/faith in him to start him against Bayern as his first Bundesliga start.

Hasn't looked great in the opening minutes. Lots of nerves I'm guessing.

Could be they figure they will lose this one so they'll rest the regular starters for the weekend match they can win

Started shaky, slowly grew into the game as it went on. Had some decent first touches and plenty of closing down, looks like he's got a good engine on him. Would've liked to see him join in the attack more often, but that likely wasn't his role today.

What was about the start that was shaky? Recorded the game, went to watch at about 3rd minute. He looked fine.

He was a little over zealous on positioning and was repeatedly out of position.. throughout the game.

I definitely agree with you, his engine (total energy) is good, power (how hard he can go in on someone) is good, hell even his speed is good. He would be a speedster if he had good acceleration but he doesn't. He' sa proper mid.

I think he was doing his bets to play off of Goretzka. So Gor took most of the forays forward. He's def box to box. Has good instincts in passing. Loved how he shielded and didn't just panic on the ball.
