Well Cameron is entrenched at CB for now, so it's not an option sadly. I would love to try Cameron at DM. But I do think Alonso would be a better DM than Cameron.

We could always just start Alonso even though he isn't eligible and forfeit the game 0-3. I hear that's all the rage in CONCACAF

How can you guys keep rating these half talented players from MLS over real players? I like Alonso too but to say he's better than Cameron or some our more talented over seas guys is a joke. Perry Kitchen and Shane O'Neil for example are also better than Alonso, forgetting about other players, those two guys are forgotten about too. Come on

We suddenly look like we have no centerback depth, to go with our no FB depth, GK questions and no #6 style DM.
I've been saying that we should 3-back/5-back to solve some problems, but there's no way we can now.
In front of that, we either have to bet the farm on Danny Williams as DM, or play a 2, 3 or 4 across. It can't be MB solo.

Is this our best lineup right now?
(not predicting what Arena will do)

...................Wood................
....Nagbe....Pulisic....Morris....
........Bradley....Williams........
FabJo Brooks Cameron Yedlin

formation bonus: can convert to other 4-back formations on the fly without using a sub, as in 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.

I think that formation is the best but disagree with the players. I dont think Morris in front of Yedlin would work. Yedlin's strength is his speed. To take advantage of it he needs to be aable to have the freedom to make dangerous runs. When he does that the RM has to know to drift back and provide cover. I dont think Morris is at a level where he would make those smart decisions. I see Morris as staying up in the attack and overly exposing us to a quick counter. If Arena keeps Fabjo at LM ( I agree with you he should be LB but Arena might think thats agreeing with Jurgen) then Fab at LM and Nagbe at RM solves that and then its just who is LB (Villafana? Lichaj? Chandler?).

Other option would be to play Acosta with DWill and Bradley and expect them to cheat inside to allow Fab/Yedlin make the runs and provide the width

Instead of Morris, I would play Hyndman, Saief, or Gooch.
If Mckennie becomes first team starter or regular, you have to consider him in the holding role as well.
Boyd, Green, Wright, Korenick need to be watched closely as well.
Interested in Mckenzie Gaines as well,

Yes, I understand. I'm not happy with Morris combining with FBs, but I think I'd solve it by switching the same XI to a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3.

My XI was "who is our strongest team right now". I'd argue that there's not a lot of choice to bring in others. Hell, I'm picking this XI against my "who I want the answer to be" instincts of the last few months to year.
-Morris just won me over.
-I love Villafaña as a pure fan, but I'd rather have FabJo fight for LB (not LM) and probably win it.
-I'm picking Williams on pedigree and experience, even though I like Acosta more as a pure fan.
-Wood over Altidore for a 4-2-3-1

As for your suggestested 4-3-3 of Acosta-Bradley-Williams, I'd probably go:
Nagbe-Bradley-Williams/Acosta, thus leaving Nagbe out of the forward line, and not forcing Acosta in. The forward line would give you some nice room to have Puli on one side (or FabJo... maybe) and Wood/Jozy/Dom middle, with Morris/Wood on the other. Not a lot of depth for this formation, so one injury might force you back to one of the other shapes. I'd commit to the 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 (both shapes) with the following roster:

mmee's July roster for September:
F: Wood, Morris, Altidore, Dwyer
M: Pulisic, Bradley, Nagbe, Nguyen, Acosta, Rowe, Williams
D: Cameron, FabJo, Yedlin, Brooks, Miazga, Spector, Villafaña, Lichaj
G: #FML x3
The last roster spot comes down to injury watch: Lletget, or Gooch, or Arriola

Lots of people to bring in ASAP after the Sept qualifiers.

@mmee - While I agree with most of your selections....there are a couple questions/changes I'd suggest....
1) You really think that Dempsey isn't going to be part of the Sept. roster, or did you just forget him? Only situation I could see him missing the Sept. qualifiers is if he's injured.
2) You've got 2 guys in your 23 I do not rate anywhere near the top 23 ....Nguyen & Spector....I don't see any chance that these 2 will be called into WCQ games when they couldn't make the cut for a weak GC squad. Expect to see OG (regardless how he performs), considering he's a guy Arena has faith in.
3) While I believe Miazga should be called up I don't think it'll happen until after we secure qualification. Expect Besler to be in the WCQ.
4) Your last roster spot (injury watch) I agree with, but there are a couple players that should be added....Lletget, Gooch, Arriola, Saief, Hyndmann, Green....there is bound to be some shake-ups depending on how players start the European season.

It was the mmee roster, not a prediction roster for what Arena will do.
It's just for discussion.

I agree with Hyndman, and maybe the other two.

I love Dempsey, of course. The question becomes: build the attack around him, or not...?
As for Besler, He'd probably be my next CB.

At this point I don't think even Dempsey would suggest to "build the attack around him", but he is still clearly among our top 3 strikers....Morris, Dwyer, Zardes, & Agudelo fairly distant behind. IMO, as the year progresses, Clint will shift more and more towards that Super-sub attacking roll. He probably won't be happy about it, but he'll realize that barring an injury to Jozy and/or Wood it's how he'll be used.

After a seriously disappointing series of performances from the wide players who started the Gold Cup the door is open for anyone who can play out wide. Gooch, Saief, & Green should all be given shots sooner rather than later.
Wasn't impressed with Corona's play as the creative CM to that opens the door for Hyndman & Saief once they return to health.

Corona's a CM, not an AM, it appears to me. That 4-2-3-1 needs an AM who's half striker, and who other teams should be terrified of on the dribble. I don't think it's Corona. I think the only guys we have like that are Puli and Nguyen and maybe making a striker into that role, like maybe Agudelo (and maybe Dempsey).

We have to stop trying MBradley and SKljest and JCorona there. I don't care which coach does it, it's just dumb.
