Twellman had one of his better showings tonight. Not sure if he's getting better or if he just had a particularly strong night but he was full of useful insight. He still had a few moments (e.g. Bruce might need to start all domestic players in Honduras because they have the CCL experience???) but with few exceptions he was channeling his inner Stu Holden.

Yeah, Twellman is the 2nd string color commentary guy.
I don't like Landon's voice or what he says.

Horrible game by Bruce, bad roster choices in the Gold Cup leads to unknown or "untested" players not being called up and used.

It was simply a bad night.

1. johnson needs to stay at LB

2. Oddly enough Zusi looked good

3. Villa -not up to this level (Garza should have been given more chances)

4. jozy-maybe a cple decent possessions but he should not be a starter

5. CP needs to be central

6. guy 1st goal was Howards fault-ream was out wide to receive the ball-timmy booted it with no pressure on him, ream pushed the guy to a horrible angle and some that ball got passed him, never should have been a goal

7. Bradley didn't offer much-not only has his forward passing gone down hill, his bite has as well

8. besler was my pick for CB or LB -he is not flashy but he has good positional awareness--I fear we will see Gonzo next game--

9. It seems like Bradley, JK, Bruce-seem to make slow reads-we should have switched to 3-5-2 quicker and or made different subs earlier

10. What does trump have to do with this game? #makeournationalteamgreat

there are more but not we clearly need 3 in the next one, tie is no good.

I thought we'd start with 1 forward and make sure we would control the midfield..have Pulisic tuck in to help Nagbe I think Arena got a little greedy, thinking he could pull off the 2 forward formation. Really backfired, left Nagbe completely exposed and ruined any chance of controlling the midfield and tempo of the game. Either Wood or Jozy could have helped by dropping into midfield to help...didn't happen. I get frustrated watching Jozy play...he had a couple nice plays, but most of it was bad touches and low energy. I'm quite happy he won't be able to play against Honduras.

Overall, a rare complete tactical whiff by Arena.

I also think Arena didn't anticipate Fab having such a poor game. With Pulisic getting double/triple teamed we needed either Fab or Nagbe to get something done with their time and space...Fab was a dead end back pass machine...Nagbe tried but doesn't have the attacking chops around the box.

I agree with others, time to have the conversation with Fab about playing LB...if he's not into it then he's out of the mix...no more invisible games at midfield.

Jermaine Jones was ahead of his time. Somehow he knew that we'd all turn into Mexico fans for the rest of the Hex. Thanks El Tri for beating Panama.

I think this game also showed that Costa Rica along with Mexico are now the top two teams in the hex. Position by position I think we have the talent edge but they have a consistent system and are very comfortable in it. What is our default game plan I dont think we have one and that can cause issues.

Also We are missing guys like a beckerman, or a JJ to dirty up the midfield and boss the tempo. Dont let the other team get a rythm in the middle of the pitch thats what we seem to have gotten away from. Costa Rica had so much time on the ball. Plus bradley like everyone else has said he isnt up to snuff he shows flashes like the mexico game but just not enough in games like these.

Its pointless to rate anyone because its same shit roster with shit players. US Soccer needs a shake-up after the WCQ are over. Everyone needs to be fired from top to bottom. Hiring Bruce Arena was the worst mistake.

I waited till after work to watch that garbage. Im pissed tbh.

Cameron and Ream my goodness they looked bad.

Zero link up play. No effort or awareness. Sluggish as hell.

This team has 0 fight and thats the big concern tonight.
Apart from Navas, Costa Rica has less talent and we lost 6-0 in two hex games. People like blaise213 like to shit on MLS players yet the person that wrecked us tonight plays for San Jose. Funny the irony.

-0 heart and bite tonight
- What are we playing at times? Unlike Costa Rica we have no system. We try to play the best players and hope for the best?
-Not giving a younger GK the experience to learn is going to kill us going forward. Howard poor tonight.
-Ream and Cameron poor. Cameron gifted them the 2nd goal with that pass.

Mmee you obviously don't know much about soccer team was to blame on the first goal Howard did what he could on both goals bad defence Gonzo and Brooks is the best cb pairing Cameron over rated also please stop hyping him he can't defend. We are ok a tie at Honduras will be a good result also. Our last 2 games should be easy 4 or 6 points easily...

Probably the most stupidest comment on this board in a while. I wouldn't called up such a shit roster to play Costa Rica to begin with? Who the fuck would call up Tim Ream let alone making him a starter? Brooks and Miazga are my starters.

Lets just keep starting backwards passing Bradley! Dude made one attempt to go forward at a defender. Im beyond tired of that idiot.

Stick with Bruce and we might make it out of qualifying but if keeps up this same shit roster, were going to get bounced out of the group stages. Another 4 years wasted

Oh adms, you are adorable, man.

Watch Howard's footwork right before the shot. It looks like he gets caught guessing.
He doesn't move at all left to right when he dives, he just rotates:
https://twitter.com/UnivisionSports/status/90...
This shot comes from a WIDE angle.

The other angle is at about 54:22:
https://youtu.be/_LRThMTjxgg?t=54m8s
Howard's feet are not set. So he covers no ground on the dive.

Third and best angle of 1st goal at about 1:01:34:
https://youtu.be/_LRThMTjxgg?t=1h1m21s
From this angle you can see exactly why I said what I said: Howard dives zero feet, because his weight was all on his left foot.
During this clip, Kasey Keller says: "I'm sure Timmy would to have maybe a couple (of) steps back" as in, he took a few bad steps (maybe guessing) instead of readying his feet. This is bad/nervous/injured goalkeeping, as it is on the second goal.

As for our team defending, on the first one it was a kinda bad place to lose the ball (then a handball not called), bad positioning, competent but not perfect defending from Tim Ream. If you don't understand why it was competent emergency defending from him, I feel bad for you.

Second goal: For me, this isn't the ready stance for this shot, when the shooter is 8-10 yards away. Howard's over-wide stance means he can't get there with his hand.
https://twitter.com/UnivisionSports/status/90...
This shot is from 18 yards out, hit with medium pace, and close to him. This is a stoppable shot. GK is in more trouble here than the first goal, but this is stoppable.
What Howard did made his chances worse.

For team defending on the second one, it was a terrible giveaway, bad emergency re-positioning by Ream, and then nothing to be done, really.

Look at the footwork and stance-widths in some highlight videos of goalkeeping.

This game exposed arena for the crap bag coach he is. Costa Rica showed from the jump they were going to double pulisic every time he touched the ball and keep a cd over for cover. Arena and/or Bradley should have recognized that they needed to beat this with a quick switch. Ball into pulisic, then when the 2nd/3rd defender come over ball goes to Bradley and nagbe quick to swing it to fab/overlapping villafana. That would have opened up space and after showing they could do that Costa would have had to adjust. Instead we kept playing right into the heart of their defense.
