Here's what I hope happens tomorrow, semi-seriously:

Arena makes FJ play fullback, and either this knocks the princely attitude out of him (and we get a good fullback), or he sucks and we never call him in again.

No, actually: fully seriously.

The mere idea that any lineup tomorrow will be decided partly by what FJ wants is maddening to me.

He told Jeff Carlisle that he's playing LM.

I don't see why you object to Fabian playing in the attack... he's miles better in and around the box than Nagbe is for example. Both should play along with Pulisic supporting the strikers. Johnson makes as good of runs as any of our midfielders, his passing is nice, and so is his vision.

I'd more so expect/hope that our defenders (plus Bradley) do the defending, and let the other 5 guys (especially the wingers i.e. Johnson, Pulisic, Arriola etc) get us a goal. And if a gripe about jurgen was playing guys "out of position" wouldn't this line of reasoning with Johnson and arena speak to that?

Hey Sam,

I disagree with the "Arriola down, other guys up" part of what you said.
Gooch is arguable, if he had been integrated into the team already. But he hasn't so the timing's bad.
Zardes and Green have nothing on Arriola, as far as overall match impact goes.

I just have been unimpressed with Arriola really, his first touch and his crossing sometimes is just poor. And if he was healthy, I'd have Saief at the top of my list of guys on here above Arriola, I'm part of the Saief train.

My grousing about FJ isn't because 'I don't want him to play up the field'.
It's because we are short on FBs (right now, badly short), he can play it, but he's made the public request to only play one position.
I'd be curious to know if Arena accepted this conditionally or unconditionally.

Wait, you're not keen on Arriola's touch and crossing, but you're ok with Zardes?

It's a reality that neither of them offer much in the way of world class technique. The thing I liked consistently about Arriola is the ability to drag that line back allowing for room for our creative players to operate in.

For about a good number of years, ever since we've been using Donovan Dempsey, then onto EJ and forwards as wingers type projects, we've been dealt with defenses who are able to put considerable pressure on our midfield because there was no threat of a wing back getting beat. As bad as Arriola has been at crossing, and I guess Zardes has a bit of this too, their bad touches are on the positive side of our line of scrimmage. Rendering us space for Pulisic, Altidore, Dempsey, Wood etc.

Personally- I'm with you and Jurgen: players should play where the coach says and not vice versa.

I also don't think much of Jorge V at LB.

However, I think Fabian is more of an upgrade in the attack than he is as a defender, that's why I'd like to see him at LM.

Game day.... I'm going with Dempsey to score in a 1-0 but to me I wouldn't be shocked to see a 1-1 draw.

Hence why I have been advocating us playing with three in the back and him playing as a wingback.

Howard
Gonzo, Cameron, Besler
FJ, Nagbe, Bradley, Villa/Beasley
Pulisic
Wood, Altidore

Nagbe over Acosta simply because he can hold onto the ball and allow the wingbacks to get forward or pick out the runs of Wood and maybe Altidore.

I too see Deuce as a supersub

Lot of conjecture on here. FabJo plays where he plays. I don't see him ever refusing to play in a spot, so the notion of an attitude is a bit misguided. And it's really hard to judge him negatively in the LM spot, when he's continuously having to cover for JV who is so far up the field and so frequently out of position.

I'd rather Fabjo play LB, since he's essentially doing it anyway due to Villafana being completely out of his depth.

we'll likely see 1 of 2 lineups.
a 3-4-3
Howard
Cameron-Gonzalez-Ream
Zusi-Bradley-Nagbe-Johnson
Wood-Altidore-Pulisic

perhaps Acosta, Villafana, or Arriola in there too.

or a 4-4-2
Howard
Zusi - Cameron-Gonzalez-Villafana
Nagbe - Bradley - Johnson
Pulisic
Dempsey - Altidore

I like either one. But I do love Pulisic in the middle pulling the strings the best.

Well, I guess I shouldn't comment if I won't either a) say what I would do, or b) guess what Arena will do.

I would be loathe to play the guys who have been mostly on the bench for the last few weeks (Villa, Lichaj, FJ)
That would force my hand quite a lot:
.......Altidore Wood.......
..............Puli................
Nagbe MB Acosta Arriola
..Ream Besler Cameron..
.............Howard............

Arena won't do this, and yes, I know Nagbe isn't ideal in that position. Obviously this formation can switch to 3-4-3 but I wouldn't do that unless CR starts playing a high line. I suppose you could swap Nagbe with Acosta if it's not working, but I'd probably use a sub instead.

I think Arena will do something like this:
........Altidore Wood........
.....Nagbe Puli Arriola.....
...............MB..................
DMB Besler Cameron Zusi
..............Howard............

I think the TSS guys (one or both) are making mistakes in the following areas:
Roldan isn't blooded enough (i.e. broken in for international ball).
Lichaj is only playing half minutes right now, and he's already a defensive liability.
Villafaña is playing less than that.
Morris would not have as much impact as Wood across 60-90 minutes.

What I suspect Bruce chooses:

--Wood-Altidore
Nagbe-Pulisic-Fabian
---Bradley
Villa-Besler-Cam-Zusi
--Howard

Sub in 60th minute: Fabian out, Arriola in.
Sub in 75th minute: Jozy and Wood out, Morris and Dempsey in

Damn, didn't see Ream coming

I like it. My only complaint is Zusi. If Nagbe is indeed on the Right then he's going to have to track back and cover for Zusi's deficiencies. It's another reason I like Fabian more on the right and Nagbe on the left.
