Do you think we'll do in essence an experimental lineup at home without Chandler or a regular wing back to execute it?

He did it in the Azteca, so why not here?

Mexico was always going to be a defensive game. Get one point.

Same strategy to secure 3 points?

I'm not saying we won't see it.

I just don't see the logic in Arena's head if he does it.

Sure. Playing with three central defenders does not necessarily mean you are playing a defensive system. If you have proper wingbacks you can pin the opposition back while having suitable cover in case you lose possession. Having FJ and Villafana play as wingbacks occupies their lb and rb, leaving Altidore and Wood 1 v 1 with the central defenders if they are playing with 4 at the back.

I would like to see.

4-3-3
Pulisic - Wood - FJ
Acosta- Nagbe - Bradley
JV - Ream - Cameron - Licaj
---Howard---

What's Howard's form of late? Seems like he was struggling a bit.

But I agree with Navi on what we will see and I don't have a problem with that lineup at all.

Zusi is a better player across the board than Villafaña- I would be fine with him at RB, but would like to see Beasley at LB, or in a pinch, Lichaj. Not a fan of Jorge V- if he is going to play though, I would rather see him at home than in San Pedro Sula...

Wood - Altidore
Nagbe - Pulisic - Johnson
Bradley
Beasley Ream Cameron Zusi
Guzan

Subs: Dempsey, Acosta, McCarty

Today's TSS was a good one: deep dive US v Costa Rice preview.

Among the interesting details, the boys are guessing that Arena may go with a Cameron-Gonzalez pairing.

I just finished the episode and fired up Yanks-Abroad specifically to ask for your thoughts since we discussed yesterday's show. I agree, it was a really good preview show. They're the best in the business and I'm happy to give them a few bob each month.

Daryl also went with a Morris-Jozy partnership and Taylor was quick to lay into him for it. I don't know, I just have a feeling that Bruce liked what he saw at the end of the Gold Cup and is going to let Morris run at Costa Rica for an hour before bringing Dempsey on in the second half.

From a Jeff Carlisle article, Fabian expects to play LM.

"We talked about it before those camps that [Arena is] going to play me at left mid[field]," he said about his discussions with the U.S. manager.

"So I'm looking forward to playing my position which I'm usually playing and which I'm comfortable with. Yeah, I think that's where I'm going to play."

Yeah I remember that part. On face value, I think it would be a mistake to start Morris over Wood. I don't see his speed as solving Costa Rice in a way that Wood's speed couldn't, especially since CR is likely to pack in and not hold a high line. Wood's overall impact at forward is higher. Morris has earned his place, but I don't think Wood and Morris are on the same tier.

Also, I would guess that Arena will see it the same way.

I think Wood will enjoy having someone else hold the ball up for a chance instead of himself- Bob Wood has always made good runs off the ball and with Altidore and Pulisic looking to play him through, he should be able to find gaps in between their 3cbs playing off Jozy who takes up one minimum. Obviously similar logic can be used with Morris.

A few years ago, the Wood/Morris substitute package looked amazing together against high quality opposition. I think that's got a chance next year in Russia provided they stay healthy. Im as big of a Jozy fan as anyone but the other two provide more speed off the ball. I'd go Wood and Altidore for this game but hopefully we get the right results because I'd like to see a Wood/Morris pairing in the Oct qualies.

Sorry that I've been gone for a bit, I've been really busy. Anyways, the US team for the WCQ, I am fine with. I would have a few things differently for sure, though. Get Wondo and send him off into space, and put Dwyer on the team. Why is Nick Rimando still here? Send him off as well and put Horvath on finally (and start him vs Honduras even). Also, Miazga/CCV for Hedges easily, Demarcus Beasley maybe (although at this point, I don't even know who I want to replace him), Danny Williams for Bedoya (should go without saying), and please, give me Zardes (even though I am critical of him) or Gooch or Green over Paul Arriola. But seeing what we've got, here's how I'd roll with the squad:

4-2-1-3 (Left to Right)
Howard
Fabian-Besler-Cameron-Zusi/Lichaj
Acosta-Bradley
Nagbe
Wood-Altidore-Pulisic

Sub Options:
Omar Gonzalez
Tim Ream
Other of Zusi/Lichaj for the starting one
Jordan Morris for either winger, Wood or Pulisic
Clint Dempsey for Jozy Altidore

It should be tough, though, this first game. Costa Rica is bringing the heat, they've got Navas there, only guy really missing is Campbell. Honduras, we'll see, we should take it. Exciting time, though, can't wait to see Pulisic once again. Hopefully, all of this continues to progress and slowly, we can bring on the future (Horvath, CCV, EPB, McKennie, Carleton, etc.).

Hey Sam,

I disagree with the "Arriola down, other guys up" part of what you said.
Gooch is arguable, if he had been integrated into the team already. But he hasn't so the timing's bad.
Zardes and Green have nothing on Arriola, as far as overall match impact goes.
