Sorry, I am getting tired of the "Bye Bye or Resign" thread and thought this would be better served moving forward.

What changes do you think Arena needs to make?

For me, it is open up competition in the central midfield...bring in players with different attributes to see whose skills and intelligence best fit. this means trying the likes of Nagbe, Feilhaber, Hyndmann, Stanko, Kitchen.

The only kid I want to see play to be cap tied is CCV. BUT no Stanko, Green, Arriba etc until they get quality minutes. JK always said you need to be playing first tier minutes and then call up players who are not playing.

But I think Arena needs to get a replacement for Beckermann. No matter what we thought of him he seemed to slow down the game for the National team in a good way. He provided confidence for the midfield and fullback to get forward when they had the chance, plus provided a physicality that is needed. Not sure if that player is Williams, Kitchen, or somebody else but to me that is the first place I would look at.

With the current player pool I see no reason this team cannot play a 4-2-3-1 formation. While it can be interchangeable I would like this group:

Hamid
Johnson Cameron Brooks Yedlin
Bradley. Williams/Kitchen
Pulisic. Lleget/SK/Nagbe. Zardes/Gooch/Morris
Altidore/Wood

The speed of this grouping could cause some serious problems for teams. Plus, I think it can provide some flexibility if you need to shift formations for whatever reasons.

Attitude

Midfield.

Probably attitude in midfield. I hate to have such a biased view, maybe because I love playing midfield, but I feel how the midfield goes, so does your team.

It's ok if we are a defend with two CDM's and allow Pulisic Altidore wood orchestrate the attack exclusively.

It's ok if we sacrifice one of those three and put nguyen nagbe feilhaber together and try to out possess the opposition.

It's ok if we go box to box athleticism with Bradley or Jones and someone who's equally as rangy, with a little more awareness of space and responsibilities and go 4 4 2 vanilla.

But we have to do it well, and execute the coach's game plan. And that starts with commitment, and the attitude.

I look at two possibilities for the team. One that includes Jones and one that doesn't.

If Arena truly wants a unified and disciplined team, he'll need to drop Jones...it will never happen with him on the field...it would be the first thing I would do...the midfield with Jones is a train wreck.

Would you say Bradley has outperformed Jones these playoffs?

I think we need to get away from both because of a combination of miles, recent performance, age, and the new way we want to play. If there is even a new way, maybe we want the same idea, just different commitment from players.? Who konws.

My suspicion is that Bradley will not be part of the January camp because he will have worked out a loan to Europe for a few months. Depending on who he calls in it could create a boost for them.

However, the most direct threats to Jones and Bradley right now play overseas in Kitchen and Williams. Nagbe and Feilhaber are in the mix IMO, but the long MLS offseason will work against them.

Imo, Arena is excited to have someone as disciplined and engaged as MB. I think he'll view him as a cornerstone in the midfield... supported by a quality equally disciplined Dmid...Cameron hopefully.

Morris: he's going to make the wrong play multiple times every single match because he won't/can't use his left foot. It's awful.

4-2-3-1: In my way of seeing things, w don't have that many #10s for that formation. We have Nagbe. After that who can beat the other team on the dribble? Asking Pulisic to do it? Gooch??
Although maybe something as simple as playing it more like a 4-3-3 will allow players more like Kljestan or Williams to do it.

Goods, I agree with your comment on Beckerman. We can even go back further and look at how important Mastro was to Bruce's MNT back in the day. In my opinion Bradley is a pretty good fit for the Reyna role both in terms of skill and leadership but we don't have many Beckerman/Mastro defensive first DMids.

Chris_thebassplayer, Cameron is probably our best player to fit the mold but we also don't have a better RCB than Cameron. I'm ok with giving the Bradley/Cameron CM pairing another shot.

Of course there isn't anything that requires Bruce to bring back the 4-4-2 empty bucket that he liked so much in Take 1 but I expect him to keep it simple at least initially.

Another option at Dmid that Arena should be crazy for is Polster...a Bruce guy if ever I saw one...that guy would take a bullet for the crest.

I actually agree with almost everyones post. We need to figure out the cm. if we cant and I know Ill get fried for this but I am ok with birnbaum in the bck and move cameron to dmid.

You are correct mastro was great, ive always like beckerman. I think we need to try benny out, only caught the playoffs but though he looked good. Bradley can still be good if he goes on loan somewhere. But benny i think can fill the role or nagbe but i would bring benny in he plays woth a chip on his shoulder.

That leaves us with this question. Will jones be around for 2018 amd or will bradley continue to regress or will he regain form. Bc if the answer is not a definative yes we need to try kitchen or stanko or frankly dax or what about alonso can he rep the use is he files a switch? The point is we need an Armas, mastro, berckman.

We also need to,figure out if fabian wants to play, he has look not fully invested in recent matches. He has too much qualitty to not produce.

The attack is looking good. Wood, morris, green, pulisc, gooch, ariola, jozy, aj,
Now this kid in seria a

IMO there are a couple key questions that Bruce needs to answer/address....
1) What formation(s) are we going to play? 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, 4-3-3, or 5-3-2
2) Is Fabian an Outside back or an Outside Midfielder?
3) What to do with the "Aging Players"....Jones, Beckerman, Wondo, etc...does he continue to use them or does he cut them out now and go with younger options.

We have decent players, but what we've lacked is a consistency in formation and player pairings (chemistry). Bruce needs to select ~30 players that can fit the formation(s) he wants to play and move forward with them as his principle players. Some of the younger guys can be added/introduced as they get playing time & experience with their clubs.

Players in Bold need to earn their National Team call-ups by getting club minutes.
Attackers: Jozy, Wood, Pulisic, Zardes, Morris, Agudelo, ArJo, Gooch, Green,
Central Mids: Bradley, Jones, Nagbe, Bedyoa, Kljestan, Feilhaber,
CDM: Bradley, Cameron, Kitchen, Williams, Canouse, Polster, Stanko
CB: Brooks, Besler, Gonzalez, Birnbaum, Miazga, CCV, Alvarado
OB: Fabian, Yedlin, Chandler, Rosenberry? Lichaj?
Keeper: Howard, Guzan, Horvath, Hamid, Bingham, Yarbrough

You know, this is going to sound like JK supporting/adversarial, but really Arena tinkers around too. He switched Donovan, historically, from the wing to forward.

And Lletget came in as a winger, then a Cam on the side, then a CM proper.

And all of this is fine, I believe. It's good as Wenger says, to put people out of comfort zones and have them understand how to do different things at different times.

So if Bruce doesn't come through with the same lineup game in game out, I feel we can't be too mad at that. Because Fabian is a midfielder and defender. Cameron is a Centre back as well as Center mid. Yedlin is both a winger and defender.

I don't have a problem with the firing of JK...or with bringing back Arena to finish this cycle. Ultimately I hope that Arena will build off of some of the work that JK did by incorporating the younger guys but I still worry that he'll hold onto Veterans (Beckerman, Wondo, Jones, etc...) like he did during his 2nd WC cycle (2006).

I just really hope we've finally seen the end of players like Wondo & Orozco....while also continuing the growth/emergence of young players (Pulisic, Gooch, Arriola) and getting some of the guys in the doghouse back (Nagbe & Agudelo).

We have a decent level of talent in our player pool. Arena just needs to find his formation(s) and build the team chemistry to the point that they can execute a game plan.
