Looks like Ligue 1 is set to start an all star game in the winter break. I love how American soccer fans grumble about how soccer shouldn't be Americanized and yet other leagues are adopting American sporting traditions. I am sure the europhiles will come out in force against this.

David Villa loved the All Star game last year. He wants La Liga to do something similar.

Many Leagues are talking about setting a salary cap. Serie A already does that.

I am not sure they are adopting the all star game because of the meaning of the game but because it will help bring more money in.

That is interesting though. I wonder how they will set it up. They do not have divisions so how do you decide who is on each team?

Right, so All star game is not only typically american it's mostly typically baseball.

When you put it in that context, and strip away anything cultural, is it still appealing to you?

I don't mind an exhibition of any sorts, the more footy I can get the better, and honestly, in a "try some offensive stuff out, no dirty tackling" nature of an exhibition, it's MUCH MUCH more pleasing to watch than any of the other sports aside from maybe Hockey and Basketball.

What I mind, is putting up conferences an divisions in things that make no sense other than to try to copy baseball. Baseball was TWO independent leagues, which honestly might still be two, since they both have a president, and different rules (DH comes to mind). National league, (the senior circuit) naturally was instituted before the American. When they joined, the only cross over was agreements with who can poach who, and the agreement to have a world series cup final at the end rather than during the season. both leagues, prior to ANY unison were top down leagues.

I believe I saw they are looking at having the best French players in Ligue 1 vs Non-French.

Well Baseball is American? So I guess I don't understand what you are trying to imply?

Agree. Kinda ridiculous that people think other countries can't learn some sports management things from US. Yes, pro/rel is cool. But so are playoffs.

I think Allstar game is cool

the very name all star comes from the depression era construct because people weren't coming out for games in the summer. and this was in playoff baseball. and we affected the rules time and time again since then to get people coming to games in the summer like interleague etc.

babe ruth btw, world's greatest ever draw was alive and well and playing.

and it's between two leagues.

so in this case NSL and MLS should come together, have that game in the summer between the best of both.. then the SOCCER BOWL, being decided between the winner of the NSL and MLS in a top down format. in the home decided by the winner of the All star game.

that's baseball. is it american?
I don't know, i wouldn't show out for corporate like that.

lamar open cup, established 1914.

if you have an exhibition in the middle of the season, then it's a friendly or a test or whatever. And soccer, the non american soccer, had those in abundance actually, before the schedules became super congested.

Firstly the all-star game was to grow the game because in the era of no tvs, no internet, and no interleague, fans wouldnt ever get to see half of the great players unless they were lucky enough to get to the World Series, and play against said player. It was a money grab pure and simple. Through the 70s it still maintained most of those reasons to keep it. By the 80s/90s it was more or less grandfathered in so they kept it as is. All star games are a pure exibition to see the highest quality of players. Im ok with MLS vs a good Euro club as it checks off all the early intent of all star games (money grab, get US fans to see stars they never get to see).

Having MLS play NASL champ/all stars would be akin to MLB champ/all stars playing AAA champ/allstars. NASL is not the same level as MLS according to every official USSF document (no matter how much NASL commission whines). No one would want to see that.

NASL has the US Open Cup, just like every country has their cup.

That pretty awesome, the Euro snobs will be mad though haha. I dont mind the all star game I mean it american but I wish we played other leagues like Liga MX or if other leagues start to do this then we can play their leagues that would be awesome.

I think this could be the eventual outcome. They'll have to work on timing as it will either be in the June break (ie MLS mid season vs end of year for Euro club) or do it during the winter break (MLS offseason but mid season form for Euro teams).

Ultimately I dont see why the Euro league would be against it. My guess would be the Euro fans would be snobby against it so their attendance wouldnt be as good as playing in USA. It also fixes the issue of format so now they just pick best 23 as opposed to trying to figure out something like domestic vs foreign, north vs south, east vs west, etc.
