Over the last couple years many posters here (myself included) have been critical of the coaches player selections, where players have been deployed, and even the formation that the team lines up in. This being the case I thought I'd pose the question(s) of what people here see as our teams greatest needs are regarding players and/or positions. What holes do we have in our starting XI and how/who can best fill the hole?

Left Back - Fabian Johnson may currently be a best Left Back option, but many (maybe most) fans want Fabian to be moved further up-field in order to take advantage of his attacking skills. This leaves a significant hole in the defense. One in which we've tried a number of players (Shea, Garza, Ream, Castillo, Orozco, Besler) without much success.
What player (eligible to represent the US) is capable of playing this position well enough to allow Fabian to move further up-field?
I see 2 possible options.....1) Villafana - has had an impressive couple of years between his play with Portland & Santos. He needs to be tried w/ the national team to see if he is able to play at the international level. 2) Chandler - many here dislike Chandler, but the fact remains we don't have many backs who play consistently is a top league. He's played LB for us in the past and has had some success and I think with Fabian in front of him and Brooks beside him it could work.

Villafana should be the next player to start at LB for USMNT. Chandler is worth another look as well if he actually plays in the Bundesliga this season.

Also, don't forget about Desevio Payne. Only 20 but he's got time to continue growing as a fullback between now and Russia. If he continues improving he'd be an attractive option.

Brek Shea for me right now. Fabian is our best attacker and has to play up the field or it's a waste given our lack of quality possession in the final third. So of the choices- call in Villafana or put Shea back in there.

I'd like to see how Villafana looks with the nats, although I'm not as crazy about him as the rest of you guys...I only see a slight improvement over someone at Garza's level...maybe pace is an issue...need to see him again.

I'm really looking to see Payne come through at LB.

But, the guy I'd really like to see given a shot at LB would be Pelosi.

If Pelosi returns to health...BIG IF. I think he could potentially be very solid defensively and also getting up into the attack. He just started training again with the Quakes.

I actually asked him at a Quakes meet and greet prior to the season if he would ever entertain the idea of playing LB for the nats if given the opportunity. He said he preferred playing mid...I think the question kind of annoyed him...implication being making the team as a mid would be out of his reach. Hey, I had to ask... anything for the cause...LB for the nats is a national crisis at this point...it's all moot if his knee doesn't hold up. I'm rooting for him...a real humble solid dude.

I think Vincent and Payne are two guys to watch out for in the LB position. For me the biggest issue is a CAM who can distribute to the attackers, while linking with a DM.

I know many feel that our greatest need is a new coach. But since that isn't likely to happen until after the 2018 WC or we fail to qualify for the 2018 WC I was trying to limit the conversation to positions and/or players. Hence my statement "our teams greatest needs are regarding players and/or positions."

Goods - I agree regarding CAM, but I think Pulisic could be very good if we chose to play him there. It would be great if we had another option that could give us the same pace, attacking, shooting and distribution skills needed.

Nagbe is great holding and distributing, but doesn't really look to set up his own shot...not a big threat. Zelalem is similar, great vision and passing but no shooting threat. Imo, we need someone with shooting ability...and adequate quickness at the international level to get his own shot off...I don't see anyone else besides Pulisic... I don't know, who is the closest to Pulisic coming up the ranks?

We need a much faster version of Zusi. Someone at the top of the box that is looking to take a crack at goal instead of someone who wants to give up the responsibility and make a safe neutral/negative 4 yard pass...we need to find the American Fat Frank...maybe Rubio?

Talent is subjective. In some instances, it's clear. Leo Messi is 100 times the player than, say, ya boy Landon Donovan. That is clear for all to see. But for the most part, there aren't many USMNT players who are on a different stratosphere than any of the others. If any. Hence why the "why doesn't Jurgen call in the most talented players" debate is fruitless. Your definition of "most talented" is different than others. It's what makes us human beings. We have our own brains.

And I'm not going to ask nice to see the rest, because frankly, I don't really care.

My best starting XI:

Howard
Yedlin Cam Brooks Villafana*
Nagbe Bradley Jones
Wood Dempsey Pulisic

*we have never seen this guy play in a US shirt. He could be great for club, dreadful for country. I have him over Fabian by about a 52/48 margin. It's a toss-up.
