My best guess at the lineup for the all important yet easy as hell road game at St Vincent:

-------- Wood ------
------- Dempsey -----
-- Nagbe -- Bedoya -- Zusi --
------ Beckerman ----
Fabian - Brooks - Cam - Yedlin
------- Guzan ---------

Subs: Altidore, Kitchen, Morales.

So with everyone attacking, I think we have to see Beckerman (or preferably Kitchen) as a stay at home defensive midfielder. Bedoya will and should be given the responsibility in the middle of the field as the all action "AB90" if you will. The wildcard to me is maybe a Danny Williams in that spot. This game should be a cakewalk and set up the USA for a win at home, and win the group vs T&T.

***the Guatemala @ T&T game played the same day is a crunch game and both side will be looking to get that win, as a win most likely would put either team into the next round. If Guatemala does pull off the road win, it would make the upcoming USA-T&T game a knockout match more than likely.

@ham I think you are on the right track but I think we may see some changes.

Jozy in for Dempsey - Save Dempsey from travelling to and from Carribean. Save him in case we need to beat T&T at home. Let Jozy start and sub him out for Morris/Gooch at half time/60' mark.

Midfield - Pulisic-Nagbe-Zardes - No need for Zusi in this one. Let Pulisic get some confidence. Also Zardes seems to be back to health.
Bedoya for beckerman - Slide Bedoya into the deeper role. We will have 80% possession. Need someone who can make passes forwards. Any attack by St V's will be on a counter, the CDM main role isnt involved in counters as thats where the defenders come in. Wont need the help getting the ball from the defense to the other midfielders.

I think thats the defense and goalie we will see although I wouldnt be surprised if Fab gets a minor injury between now and then to miss these matches.

Pulisic is a tricky one. It is the international break, but I would wait until the October friendlies for guys like him, Green, Gooch and Morris.

I am all for starting Jozy with Wood I just think without Bradley and Jones on the field, in such an important game, it would be less risky to put Clint on the bench. I do think that come Russia 2018, provided they are both healthy, that Jozy/Wood is going to be the starting two up top.

My starting line up for the 2nd

Guzan
Fabio Brooks Cameron Yedlin
Bedoya Kitchen Nagbe
Wood Altidore Zardes

Subs Pulisic, Gooch, Birnbaum, Morris, Acosta, Chandler, Howard, Hamid, Gonzo, Green

Zardes gives the starting 11 tons of flexibility in switching formations and making it difficult on a defending team.

Dempsey is out and hopefully this is not a career ending type issue.

Didn't EJ have this same issue crop and end his career?

While it doesn't necessarily mean Clint out of consideration for the Sept. Qualifiers I actually hope that the coaches don't call him up. Let him have the time off to address the medical concerns, and if able come back for the Hex.

And yes EJ did have a heart issue, but his was associated with an enlarged heart. This can present itself as an "Irregular Heartbeat" but it's not necessarily what is occurring here w/ Clint.

Many things can create an irregular heart beat, so to say it is similar to so and so would not be fair to anybody. With that said I would expect him out of the Sept. Qualifiers. Will be interesting in that first game no Bradley no Dempsey probably no Jones. Could be a reason to bring a vet we all scream about: Beckerman. I would not play him but let him be that settling influence in the locker room.

If he's gonna bring in a vet who is a good locker room guy, why wouldn't it be Wondo? They play the same position...

I think we see that Altidore/Wood pairing now for sure.

@goods- it's entirely possible that Zardes starts this game, either with Wood or Altidore, or on the wing. Some sort of 4-3-3 with all three up top having Jozy as the central striker is also possible. This first game is a must win and so the on the field leadership needs to come from guys like Cameron, Bedoya and Altidore.

Well that sucks for Clint good luck finding out what is the cause.

Morris, Wood, Green, Altidore, Zardes, are the likely FWDs. Let ArJo continue to get back in the flow of things with Bremen. Rubin may get the nod as well.

One week to go before the big games, as usual the USA makes their roster announcement last. We should paste StV&G regardless, but that next game may be all to play for, or nothing to play for... How will that impact tomorrow's 23 man roster announcement??

Birnbaum announced he's been selected. Assuming brooks and Cameron as given that means only one more spot at cb. We're early tumors of a much larger camp (close to 30 guys) so that if they clinch advancing they can send some euro guys back early (fab, brooks, etc).

@Msantoine - hopefully the early rumors of a larger camp is accurate. Considering a number of our regulars (Jones, Bradley, Dempsey) are either suspended or out due to medical there are a too many unknowns to limit the squad to 23 players.
If there are close to 30 players called up we'll hopefully see a number of the younger players (Gooch, Green, etc...) & those returning to health (Johannsson, Rubin, etc...) get brought in for evaluation.
