I'm not really surprised Wondo was called up. Once it was clear Dempsey wasn't gonna be there, we all knew Wondo would be.

We all know JK really likes tone setting veterans in camp and doesn't like too many young guys, I think he really values Wondo's worth ethic and off ball movement which plays great in practice against the first team defense. He's got his issues and isn't a great finisher of course but if he helps improve the group in training I can see the reason for it.

Having said that, I'm still very upset he's there.

I also don't get how we can be so thin at outside back yet he doesn't give anyone else a look like Lichaj or Villfana (or even Rosenberry would be better than MOF).

Also odd to see Stanko get the call and Kitchen not... if Kitchen was ever going to get a start it would have made sense to give him the #6 role now with Bradley out, doesn't bode well for him.

With Zardes and Dempsey out it was going to happen. I guess people are missing the fact that we need two results (at minimum a W first game) and this isn't the time for experimentation. But some of you are on one today:

He called in Morris and Rubin and people are upset that Wondo is in. All three being bench players, of course.

As for Perry Kitchen, I've called for it numerous times. But logically, if Jürgen was going with Beckerman at DM in game 1 and Bradley at DM in game 2, it doesn't make much sense for Kitchen to travel back for games he won't play in. Beckerman is in because of the yellow card suspension for Bradley, and it's good because Bradley, Jones and Dempsey (three of our leaders) are out for this must-win.

My question is this: why was Gonzalez called in if Cameron and Birnbaum are there (Brooks, Besler LCBs)?? That's a place for all you gripers that could've went to a Gooch or Green... The only reason is if Cameron and Brooks (and maybe Fabian and Wood too) head back to their clubs if qualification is assured after game 1. Most of the team these days is MLS based...

Now Stanko may be injured. That's question marks on Jones and Stankos health.

Kitchen seems the likely replacement.

Maybe I missed it but not yet commented was the inclusion of pulisic. If it was believed that there was any chance of a transfer or loan would he be called in?

I'm disappointed with the continued inclusion of Wondo, Beckerman, & Orozco. I understand the need for some veterans, but OMG I'm sick of seeing these guys trotted out and wasting space on the field.
I'm surprised that Jones was included considering he's been out injured basically since the Copa America. Would have to believe that Jones can't be match fit after being sidelined for a month. I would much rather seen Kitchen, Williams, or Morales be brought in....especially considering Bradley is suspended for the 1st match. St. Vincent isn't a tough opponent, but they do have speed they can use to counter....and we all know that Beckerman is slower than a dead snail.
I'd prefer almost anyone over Wondo. He may be a good locker room presence, but he sucks with the NT and hasn't been very good in MLS since the Copa. If you want a veteran call up Johannsson, otherwise choose between Gooch & Green.

I do not mind the inclusion of Orazco or Beckerman. Beckerman is there to work with Kitchen and Stanko, in my mind that is a quality call up. With Orazco does the US have another player who can play all four back line positions. He is playing regularly with TJ this season, plus is being used all over the place.

Wondo is a bit of a surprise, but once again if he is coming in as an overage person in camp to help coach and teach the stikers I am OK with it.

I have a feeling Beckerman and Wondo will be more sounding boards for JK than anything. But if they see time on the pitch that changes my view.

I may be completely wrong but I really feel like if Dempsey and Zardes were healthy then Wondo wouldn't have been called in. I am ok with certain players being left off For 2 reasons. Let them continue to get a firm hold on their club position and we have to win these games. Go with what you are most comfortable and sure of. Yes these games should be a shoe in but if we went with a new young lineup and we lost you would all be extremely pisssed. There are some easy friendlys coming up hopefully there are new players there.

Klinsmann prefers certain veteran players thats been obvious. I will say this it is not the world cup yet he still has nearly 21 months to make a decision about his best 23. If he puts wondo or beckerman on those rosters then we have issues that tells me our forward pool isnt looking good or in midfield we have failed to find any alternatives to beckerman.

Its early remember Bocanegra was dumped before the first game of WCQ against Honduras away. If at any point during the WCQ Klinsmann feels that wondo or beckerman arent up to their required levels he will get the knife out. Lets not forget his World cup roster cuts he dropped veterans in Parkhurst and Goodson to go with Brooks and Yedlin and it worked out pretty well. Also I would like to point out a certain Bobby Wood not playing much with Club being called in and look where he is now. Sometimes its about building up confidence with young players so the stanko and Arriola call ups arent the worst things in the world.

Plus I think it is important with such a large camp for somebody to beat them out. Have that passing of the torch in camp, if these kids can't beat them out it says more about our depth than Klinnsmans decisions.

On Gooch he sees the depth in midfield. May want to hold out for Ireland, apparently CCV is holding out for England.

On the positive side- we have two attacking fullbacks in Fabian and Yedlin. Two CBs who can cover lots of ground and pass well in Cameron and Brooks. That to me looks like your back line in Russia 2018. At the forward spots we have Altidore and Wood. They appear to complement each other well and look to be the partnership moving forward. Brad Guzan is moving forward towards Russia as well. That's 7 of your likely 11 for most qualifying games right there. If people don't like Jozy, well then Morris or Rubin is sitting right there. The point is- our defense and attack have plenty of time to get used to each other during the cycle.

Yea it's disappointing Jürgen still has to rely on Beckerman. Or Zusi. Or that Nagbe hasn't taken the next step. Pulisic is a viable alternative, as is Paul Arriola. At least to project towards 2018. For me it's important that most of the players that will be in Russia to be responsible for getting there. Winning this game is of utmost importance so win first, develop second game.

One of the more surprising call ups in my mind is Gonzo over Chandler. Gonzo has been out of favor since the game against Peru about a year ago and Chandler was on the preliminary Copa Roster before he picked up an injury. This roster lacks Full Back depth but has all kinds of CB depth.
