Didnt Chelsea win the title 4 years ago?

Yes the spanish clubs have done better recently. But a lot of that, AGAIN, is due to the weaknesses of La Liga then their strength. EPL teams almost never have throw away games. So when they have the double game weeks they get stretched. Sacrifice 1-2 EPL games, or suffer in european competition. The Spanish teams can almost always play a full B squad and still win the league games (80% of the time) and then be rested and ready for the European games.

Now you can say why hasnt an EPL manager figured out the balance yet, and that would be a great question. But to say because Spanish teams (and Munich) outperform EPL in UCL means their leagues are better isnt painting the whole picture.

No on Chelsea. Maybe 5 years ago.

Yeah, I'm not going to re-hash all of these arguments. I'm actually a little biased towards liking all things English football. Definitely not one of the bashers that's on here. No doubt a kernel of truth to what you're saying. But there's quite a build up of negative results for English football over the last 5-10 years.

Further to your point about Chelsea winning the CL, they were in a position where they were not going to make the CL through league position so they prioritized the CL and saved their players for the Barca semis and the Munich final.

Most countries have two competitions: A tiered league competition and a cup competition. England and Scotland have a third cup competition. Add European matches to that and you stretch your team thin.

For a few years running, the EPL leaders were also chasing the FA Cup and the CL. The Semis of the FA Cup and the semis of the CL are roughly the same time so atime has no choice to prioritize as the English FA will not work with the EPL teams in Europe with their scheduling.

The epl or insert league here is the best league in the world is a tired argument. Ironic that the person who cherry picked the stats of representation in euros as evidence that epl is the best is suddenly pointing out another's flaw with not looking at the whole picture. Btw by your rationale, Icelandic league is better than epl serie a must be better than la liga as teams compromised mostly of players from those leagues beat their respective counterparts. Personally I do not like epl I think other leagues are miles above from a technical point of view and find bundesliga, la liga, serie a and several small leagues like Ligue 1, Ligue sagres to be better quality. But that is an opinion. I understand why epl fans think like they do and even believe there are good arguments for belief that epl is the best. What I don't understand is why epl fans consistently feel the need to benchmark or rationalize why epl is the best. Other than an outlier (admsgh) I don't see nearly the number of fans of other leagues spouting off all the time. It must arise from an inferiority complex related to the continued poor performances related to England national team.

Lol i do agree with you that Euros have been very disappointing compared to copa america... But i knew that already before it even started.... Most have agreed Copa America has been better in all aspects but I'm comparing CR7 and Messi. if Ronaldo somehow wins this cup playing good which he has been so far he has to be considered better than Messi no doubt and i'm talking about so far.... He has everything he has except for an INTERNATIONAL TITLE... And even tho Argentina has a massively more talented squad than Portugal....

Boy does it suck watching Portugal play. They bring out the worst in every team. Poland plays Switzerland in one of the best games of the tourney, up and down action, 4 goals, near misses, 50+ shots, and then Portugal, which is vastly more talented, bunkers down and plays snail pace soccer.

Belgium/Wales better beat them in the semis. Portugal will make the finals tough to watch

Would you guys be happy with a WC win with the style that Portugal has played?

Defensive, nothing inspiring, getting results, maybe a couple games with a man down, hitting them on counters, or even just settling for penalties?

Portugal isn't playing to the ability of their players. They have a number of very good players and at least 1 world class player. While there are times where/when the bunker & counter strategy makes since (Usually when your opponent is vastly superior), but Portugal has been using it against everyone regardless of the talent of the opponent.
They're not even doing it successfully, considering that they haven't one a single game yet....can't really count the PK win.
While the US often uses this strategy we are also more often than not, at least at the WC, the weaker team (talent wise). When we are equal or better than our opponent we tend to play a very open style of game. Hopefully as our player pools talent increases we'll see less bunker style from the US.

Would you agree with the possibility that maybe sometimes our bunker style gets born out of our not being able to organize properly? I feel our U - 17's showed this. Pulisic is clearly a talent, Haji Wright, Perez at Fiorentina, Luca De la torre etc, we had talent all across that team and yet we couldn't piece it together. And we were reactive instead of dictating the flow of the game.

Of course everyone would be ecstatic to win like that. Ask Greek fans about their surprise win. But that model isnt sustatinable (ask Greek fans about Faroe Islands)

Add in the fact that Portugal has not just Ronaldo but Moutinho, Pepe, Carvalho, Nani are all real good players and its embarrasing they play that style against teams like Portugal, Hungary & Iceland

Are you serious??? Have you watched any games??? Aside from the match against Hungary Ronaldo has been horrible so far (and other than Croatia, they've had really weak opposition). Did you see the miss he had last night?

Messi has been consistently better than Ronaldo for both club and country. He has won more than Ronaldo. He has actually played well in a major tournament this decade despite the mess that is the Argentine national team. If Portugal somehow goes without winning any more games and wins the Euro, and Ronaldo continues to suck, that somehow makes him better than Messi? You make no sense.

It'd also be cool if we had anyone even on the same planet as Bale or Ramsey, but yeah...not to mention Belgium's backline today compared to when we played them is a joke.
