Reading through the comment section there was one that stuck out to me. If the US Colombia game would have been reversed how many people would say we were just lucky to beat Colombia based on how the game was played? I feel a large majority of people would take that stance but since it happened this way no one will give credit to the US and the world is coming to an end.

Anything can happen in a one off, dude. Whoever wins the NBA title this year one thing's for sure, it won't be a fluke; it won't be luck. That team will have had to win 4 7-game series in a row. Case closed.

You don't make snap judgements after each US game (as everyone one this site does of course). You make the judgements over the last 5 (meaningful) games, the last 10 years, etc.

If the US doesn't make it through the group, let's face it, it will have been a shitty, shitty last 12 months. If we do make it through the group, then hey, were doing OK, but it still doesn't erase a bunch of poor results over the last 12 months. If we win the tournament, then OK, it almost does erase the last 12 months.

Ok. But our last 4 games we have played solidly...Going back to the 2nd game against Guatemala. We played good then, We played very well against Ecuador (particularly the 2nd half), and well against Bolivia. Sure 2 of those were friendlies and 2 of them were against subpar opponents. But prior to that we have had many poor performances against bad opponents.

Of course you take every game in the bigger context of all of the games. But right now we have played well 4 games in a row.

No, you're way off. You have to apply a heavier discount to friendlies.

And all of those games were at home. And Bolivia isn't much of a team, neither is Guate. And, shit, you're mentioning Puerto Rico!? Ecuador is a good team, but let's face it, we stole a win there. A tie would have been more deserved. Or I actually thought Ecuador looked the better team.

I hate to be negative, just describing reality.

Actually I did not count Puerto Rico. And what you describe is not reality. First off the issues you bring up were already taken into account and said by me.

I counted Guatemala, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Colombia. Those are the 4 games in a row. Puerto Rico wasn't even on my radar.

You are getting worked up. You need not. Not sure why you would get worked up over someone being positive and looking at things being positive for the USMNT. Not sure why people get so stubborn about their negativity in regards to their favorite team, to where they get worked up and upset. No reason to curse, etc.

The thing about soccer is the score dictates the possesion and pace of game. If you go up early, you tend to sit back to preserve the lead. You let the other team possess the ball. You willingly lose the possession battle because the other team kicking the ball back and forth on defense doesnt hurt you. Look at the Ghana game and the Portugal game. Against Ghana people said they dominated us. Clint scores in 30 seconds and we sit back. They had almost 60% possesion & outshot us 21 to 8. How ever they never really looked dangerous and we were unlucky not to score a few more goals. Then against Portugal possession is 50/50, shots are very close and people act like we played well. Thats because Portugal for the most part sat back and let us go after them after getting that early goal.

Maybe in the first half. But if they were better in the first half and we were better in the second and got a goal, wouldn't that make US the better team?

I agree. Same can be said in every sport. That is the great thing about sports. You are always adjusting what you are doing for the situation. Possession is a great stat but I agree it can be misleading. The big part for me in the Colombia game is they didn't look dangerous at all. Just like Ghana. What Cuadrado would do was nice to watch at times but still never felt like we were in danger. There was the one play where Bacca(?) hit the crossbar but that is it in my opinion. Of course I wanted us to win and really thought we could. I didn't think we looked like we shouldn't have been on the field with Colombia.

that Bacca play was when we were down 2-0 and pressing hard for another goal and leaving us open for a good counter. They had 4-5 great counter attacking opportunities in the 2nd half. The Bacca one was the only one that truly became dangerous and a real goal scoring opportunity.
