I don't think it's a threat to their livelihood.
The players that are too expensive too pay if relelgated would be sold off and would likely go to a better team (good deal), and the others that aren't too expensive would stay there and likely more of them would get playing time (with the expensive people being sold off).
Either way they are still playing soccer, doesn't affect them in terms of salary, playing soccer, etc. Just affects the level of competition.

On the topic of top foreign defenders in MLS. . . it's been interesting to see Jelle Van Damme at the Galaxy this year. So, here's a guy with 30 caps for the Netherlands, but coming from Standard Liege. Clearly past his prime, but I don't think by much. He's only 32 - Not that old for a CB.

You knew his ball skills were going to be better than Gonzo's, but it's really the physicality that separates most of the good foreign CBs from homegrown CBs. Van Damme is a beast. He's a bully. This is basically what you need to be as a defender in pretty much every sport. I don't see that type often from US soccer players. Anyone??

And I think Ashley Cole is a separate issue. At 35 I'm not expecting much from him, but we'll have to wait and see. Although I will predict the Galaxy to win it all as I always do.
