Pretty rare for guys to turn down a call up. Even more rare to turn it down because of pre-season with club.

14 months away from a world cup - he'll be there. And if the pre-season is really that important to him then Bruce will cut him loose after group stage.

Miazga actually has a hard decision. Play in gold cup and miss preseason, eliminating any small chance of sticking with Chelsea but possibly moving into the 2/3 CB slot, skip the gold cup and either make Chelsea or get loaned out early enough to be integrated from the jump (I wouldnt be surprised to see him loaned to a relegation caliber team like Bournemouth, Newcastle, Burnley, Watford) but possibly piss of Arena and not get any looks until injuries/next cycle.

Huge decision for him.

IMO opinion this is a bit of a no in the Gold Cup.

It is likely Chelsea have already received offers to loan him out and if not I am pretty sure he will be welcome back at Vitesse. He will more than likely know his future before the Gold Cup starts. In fact, since Chelsea are not touring the US this year, I doubt he will train at all with them and will report to his loan team after the Gold Cup. Personally, I am hoping he returns to Vitesse for one more season as it is familiar to him and he can potentiallty play in the Europa League.

I seriously doubt he stays with Chelsea next season. Even with John Terry leaving they have Christensen coming back from Gladbach and they will probably buy one over the summer.

And as to the why they bought him in the first place...he was an asset they could buy cheaply, improve, then sell at a profit if he didn't meet their standards. Might as well play in the Gold Cup to better put yourself in the shop window.

Per Dutch media, #USMNT CB Matt Miazga returning to Vitesse for 17/18 on loan from Chelsea. Will play in the Europa after Dutch Cup win

I would think he would continue to be a starter after the way he played there last year. Gets to play in Europa and hopefully plays a lot of minutes.

Great to see. Almost guarenteed to be week in/week out starter. I wonder if there are any buyback options. Either way Miazga should be in the mix for 2018. If he plays well this year no way would I take Besler or Omar over him

Wasn't he playing a fair amount of DM last year or did he eventually revert back to predominantly playing CB?

I think this is the move that presented the best opportunity for playing time.

He played his way into the starting lineup at the end of the season and it appears the fans like him. Joining any other team at this point of pre-season would have hampered his development as he surely would have been relegated to the bench. Here he knows the coach and the system and can slot right into training.

He was playing left center back for them last year, so he has been forced to develop both feet and has appeared to make strides.

Playing in the Europa league will be good for his development as well!

I do think there were other options at the start of the summer, but not getting much match time at the GC may have had an impact on this decision. I think Miazga himself wanted to go back.
