That was always going to be a possibility and a last resort but they left it too late to bring in a more seasoned defender and he was needed as cover just in case.

Still, he will probably get minutes and Chelsea do have a coach on loan to Vitesse for the season (yeah, they do that too). Better the Dutch league than the Belgian league!

And yes, it looks like GZ stayed with Arsenal.

I like the move. At least Vitesse will have some incentive to play him with the Chelsea connections and all.

Also I like the thought of a young defender playing in Eredivisie. With all the offense in that league it really keeps you on your twos and you see a lot of open, attacking football.

It seems that the Espanyol loan was on and was supposed to happen but the La Liga side screwed up the paperwork and Chelsea had to use the Vitesse option at the last minute otherwise he would have been stuck playing U-23 matches for the rest of the season.

Got his first minutes today for Vitesse. Entered as a substitute in the 70th minute with the score 7-2 in favor of Vitesse in their Dutch Cup match.

Glad he got some minutes, but since he didn't start against what is clearly inferior opposition it looks like he is far down the pecking order and minutes may be hard to come by this season.

the allure of Chelsea strikes again. Hope he's able to get some non-cup minutes soon.

Let's just hold our horses the season is still very young and he went to Vitesse on the last possible day. Matt Miazga is very talented and ambitious- I back him to succeed. He will play a lot for Vitesse this year make no mistake about that.

I wish I shared your optimism regarding playing time. As you say, he went to Vitesse on the last day...if they really were interested in him he would have been loaned much earlier in the window. Chelsea needed to hold onto a defender just in case they could not buy one, but it could just as easily been Hector, the Jamaican international who is now in the Bundesliga.

That being said, MM is still young and training day in day out will still be beneficial. Perhaps later in the season he will get a good run of matches. The Vitesse manager is a former defender so even if he does not play a lot of matches, he should still get some good instruction.

Vitesse is basically a AAA farm team for Chelsea and so I'm sure he will play. Chelsea will want to keep his value up and so he will get on the field.

Played about 30 minutes in the league as a sub after playing as a sub in the cup. He will start soon, I'm sure of that. The most important thing he can learn is technique and positioning while he is in Holland, the physical and mental aspects of his game are sound. He just needs refining and Vitesse is the type of place to do just that.

I was going through vitesse roster and I see that they have like 4 or 5 CB'so with plenty of experience. Don't know what that means for miazga but if he doesn't get playing time in the next few weeks he will most likely ride the bench or be with the reserves the rest of the year. Doesn't look good for him.

I was pleasantly surprised to see he got some league action as a sub on sunday. However, from the video, it looks like he was asked to play as a midfieler

If he can develop into a holding midfielder great, but he has lots to learn. If you look at their second goal look who is trailing the play.

I'd just say they would be putting an extra defender in front of the back four. Anything that helps work on his technique and spacing for me is what he needs. He has good ball control and passing ability, but his game needs that refinement. People need to relax he will play- have they forgotten already what Miazga is about? I back him because of his personality and work ethic.
