I figured mine as well do it now as the 3rd place game isnt going to prove anything. No way Panama plays with any heart so even if we won 6-0 I wouldnt feel great about it. So here are some pros & cons I feel about the gold cup and some lessons learned.

Pros:
Dempsey is still needed. Hes still clearly a top scorer in CONCACAF and was our only real threat.

Good to see Aron get out of his funk he was in. Missed some chances but looked more like pre World Cup Aron. May finally be back from his injuries.

Bedoya loooked fantastic once he was back in form. Easy to see why some EPL/Bundesliga teams were looking at him.

Cons: (just the top ones as there are too many to list)

Brooks really struggled. He is our most talented CB by a mile but seems like he could use some veteran leadership to help him out. Whether that comes in the form of Howard or not is fine with me. Played fantastic defense but made too many brain fart mistakes (2 yellows, a couple of the goals). Bright future. Hopefully he gets there.

Beckerman- Seriously. He looked poor in each game. Why was he continuously thrown out there.

Jozy- No explanation needed.

Fab- I think his play was over looked but he should have dominated. He was arguably one of the 3 most talented players in the whole tournament and one of the few who will play UCL group stage soccer this year. Where was he? He had a few good crosses but he was never flying up and down the flank like most expecetd. Was he staying at home to help the CBs? Afaid to go forward due to not being familiar with Zardes covering for him? Something was off with him.

To me the biggest takeaways are as follows:

1) Time to send some vets out to pasture. Thanks KB & Evans but your not needed anymore.

2)Our defense has potential but needs a rock back there. No I dont think Omar is a rock. Maybe Timmy can be. We are suffering for not having anyone pick up the torch from Dolo & Boca. Beasley isnt that type of guy. Besler & Omar dont have the experience, skill to be that guy. I think Jones could be that guy if healthy but he doesnt seem to want to play CB. We'll see.

3) Missed opportunity- Im not talking about auto qualifying for the Confed Cup. As I think we'll still get there. And if we win the playoff then it doesnt matter that we lost this gold cup (although it would have been nice to win for sure). The real missed opportuinty will be in the FIFA rankings. We can pretty much kiss any real chance of being a top 10 FIFA ranking goodbye. With a draw to Panama and loss to Jamaica, as well as no chance to beat Mexico now, our rating will only go up so much. Then Euro Qualifying & 201 Euros will come and all the European teams will blow by us. Im not saying I think FIFA rankings our meaningful in saying who the best teams are, but as long as FIFA still uses them to determine seeding they are important.

I agree with everything you said. AJ is our best forward. KB is awful. Where was Danny Williams?

He started two games. Our listless 1-0 win vs Haiti, and our loss to jamaica. I dont think thats a coincidence. What does he do well? Sure he looked ok vs Cuba in the 2nd half but if thats your pro-Evans arguement you need to watch more soccer. Evans is clearly not skilled enough for international soccer. It should be Fab, Chandler, or Yedlin only on the right side until Payne is ready

If ArJo is our best forward then we are screwed. His finishing is at best average for a striker. He makes very good runs, etc but his finishing is bleh.

Fabian was making some GREAT runs up the sideline last night. What were you watching? There was one I was SCREAMING at Zardes as Fabian was making a great run with no defenders near him, Zardes takes the ball inside, completely misses Fabian and promptly passes it to Jamaica. That's not a first for Zardes. I've seen him do it several times this tournament. Missing Fabian making a great run down the sideline. He does not pair well with a LB that makes runs like that. Part of the reason is he doesn't cut inside, and he likes to make those runs on the outside. Bedoya needs to play with Fabian and Zardes on the other side with Evans. Evans doesn't make those runs as much and would combine better with Zardes. Chandler too, he does cut inside.

That's one thing about starting so many young guys in a tournament, is you don't know exactly what they bring and how they will link up/react. Now they have the experience and JK is learning more about them and how they play.

Evans didn't get dispossessed by anyone on his dribbles

Yedlin Bradley did.

I love both those guys, but Evans made runs with the ball when he was left alone and put some nifty moves in the box against Jamaica. i truly underrated his skill on the ball, he's very good with the ball at his feet. I keep forgetting he's a midfielder. he was also solid defensively. Do i think we keep Evans, probably not because of the guys you mentioned, but to blame him for anything last night is weird. He's a tidy player with no athleticism, and if he ever downloads his brain into Yedlin, our team will be better for it.

the fact that you include chandler, a player I like and have hopes for, who must be said made mistakes means that you aren't going on form, but on promise. Which again, I agree with you.

I just disagree that Evans played badly. He didn't.

My observation for the tournament is that we didn't have Beasley or Shea for LB. That forced Jurgen to play the lineup he did. Fabian Johnson is better in attacking midfield than Zardes, Yedlin, Bedoya, Mix or anyone else we have. Instead we wasted him at LB, overlapping only to have Zardes not see him until it was too late and he was offside.

We also still haven't replaced an in form Jozy. We need him.
