I don't know the AP and USAtoday have developed pretty decent systems for ranking NCAA teams that don't necessarily play each other. Maybe FIFA needs to allow third parties to run the rankings.

I know that there are ELO rankings and there is nothing preventing a third party from doing their own rankings but if FIFA published the list(s) on their site it would be a game changer.

Meh. The AP & USA polls were so flawed they created the BCS system. That too is flawed and they are tweaking it every year. Same as RPI for NCAA Hoops. Teams find out how the formula is calculated and schedule to play the softest schedule while maintaining a high ranking.

FYI if we win out in the Gold Cup we will have a highest ELO rating ever, and be at least #10 in the World, if not #8 or 9. If we get to #9 then that ties the highest we have ever been ranked, but this time with a higher rating (IE the best USA team ever).

Well people made the same argument when we were ranked 4th but I was definitely disappointed in our ranking. How we beat Germany and Netherlands on the road and slipped 7 places is beyond me. I know they were friendlies. I as well looked at the teams ranked ahead of us and saw us beating most of the teams you listed in a competitive competition more times than they would beat us. But hopefully winning the Gold Cup will give us a pretty good jump next month. CONCACAF in general suffered heavily in the rankings. Clearly showed FIFA is pro-UEFA, CONMEBOL and a bit of a fan of CAF.

We should have never been ranked 4th. I think we are as good now as we have ever been and I still would barely put us in the top 10.
We are a top 15 team right now and have never been better than that.

I agree that we are around a top 15-20 team in the world. I think we could be competitive in any confederation. We might not make the World Cup as regularly in CONMEBOL or UEFA but we would definitely be a challenge for the elite teams.

UEFA has 22 of the top 30 teams. They've played 6 UEFA qualifiers. CONCACAFA hadnt played any. CAF played 1. I think AFC played 1. CONMEBOL also had the COPA which is why Venezuela, Peru, Paraguay, & Bolivia all gained 15-30 spots.

The only CONCACAF teams not to plummet were the ones who had the preliminary WCQ rounds.

What kind of formula rewards crappy teams playing in those rounds more than us beating Germany/Netherlands

Hahaha wow did not think these FIFA rankings could not get any more ridiculous.. I mean they are a complete joke. I think the Elo rankings are much more accurate.. Is funny because when USA loses friendlies they drop big time but when we start winning big game friendlies they dont matter so we stay put or even drop a few places.

Just to show how ridiculous they are. Us beating Germany in a friendly gives us 546 points to then average out. Germany beating Farore Islands in UEFA qualifying gives them 1211 points. So pretty much Germany beating a crap Euro team, and losing to us gives them an average of 605.5 FIFA points. USA beating Germany in friendly gives us 546 points. Any system that says if you beat Faroe Islands and lose to USA its better than beating Germany is severely flawed

In the end global rankings shouldn't matter. They should ditch the whole process and do it regionally.

When it comes to the WC, the top team in each qualifying region (selected by total points qualifying if a single group or the top rated team in the region in the WC if more than one group), save Oceania, should get one seed, as well as the Host and the previous Champ or a rep from their region...so that is 1 Host, 1 Champ, 1 COMNEBOL, 1 Asia, 1 UEFA, 1 CONCACAF, 1 CAF and 1 from the region of the Federations Cup winner or the winner (Added incentive)

I actually wish they'd use previous world cup results. Reward teams like Netherlands, Germany, Argentina that consistently win their groups. Don't let a team like Switzerland game the rankings to get a seed. Something like group stage points plus 3 for making knockout round, + another 5 for qf, plus another 5 for semis, 5 for finals and 10 for winning. Use the last two of three world cups.

Personally I think they should use a combo of the Confederations championship and the World Cup Qualifying to determine each confederations ranking/seeding.
Here are the top seeds:
1-Host (Brazil)
2-Defending World Cup Champ (Spain)
3-Defending World Cup Runner-up (Netherlands)
4-UEFA #1 (Germany)
5-Conmebol #1 (Urugay)
6-Concacaf #1 (USA)
7-CAF #1 (Ghana)
8-AFC #1 (Japan)

Then have the remaining Conmebol teams and CAF teams in Pot 2:
1-Ivory Coast
2-Nigeria
3-Cameroon
4-Argentina
5-Colombia
6-Chile
7-Ecuador
8-Algeria

Pot 3 is the remaining CONCACAF and AFC teams with 2 lowest UEFA teams:
1-Iran
2-South Korea
3-Australia
4-Costa Rica
5-Honduras
6-Mexico
7-Croatia
8-Switzerland

The remaining 8 UEFA teams in Pot 4:
1-Belgium
2-Bosnia
3-Greece
4-Italy
5-England
6-Russia
7-Portugal
8-France

Same rules apply for the draw, no group can have more than 2 UEFA teams and no more than 1 from an other confederation.

Group A:
Brazil
Nigeria
South Korea
England

Group B:
Spain
Colombia
Honduras
Russia

Group C:
Netherlands
Cameroon
Australia
Portugal

Group D:
Germany
Ecuador
Mexico
France

Group E:
Uruguay
Ivory Coast
Switzerland
Italy

Group F:
USA
Algeria
Iran
Belgium

Group G:
Ghana
Argentina
Costa Rica
Bosnia

Group H:
Japan
Chile
Croatia
Greece
