First the criteria I am using is:
A-Be a big contributor on a Big club and/or have the ability to be a contributor on a big club.
B-Be a big contributor for your National team.

Obviously there are going to be exceptions if you are playing behind a world Class player, you could still be considered World Class.

Big Clubs are very limited, had to be very successful and make it to at least half of the last 6 Champions leagues and be one of the top teams in term of Revenue. So I arrived at this:
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man United, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Juventus, Milan, Dortmund, PSG, Schalke 04, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid.

Here is the players:
GK (12) - Cech, Lloris, De Gea, Courtois, Buffon, Bravo, Alves, Navas, Surigu, De Santis, Ter Stegen

Def (31) - Jones, Koscielny, Clichy, Jagielka, Baines, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Skrtel, Zabaleta, Blind, Cuadrado, Chiellini, Otamendi, Gimenez, Pique, Ramos, Marcelo, Godin, Alves, Busquets, Alba, Hummels, Toprak, Fuchs, Boateng, Sokratis, Silva, N'Koulou, Lahm, Mascherano,

Mid (22) - Gabregas, Cazorla, Matic, Toure, Pogba, Marchisio, Vidal, Pjanic, Koke, Kroos, Robben, Xhaka, Alonso, Bender, Schweinsteiger, Verratti, Ayew, Kondogbia, Aranguiz, Iniesta, Xavi, Ramsey

Attacking (28) - Hazard, Sanchez, Aguero, Ozil, Silva, Costa, Rooney, Oscar, Tevez, Depay, Hulk, Messi, Saurez, Neymar, Ronaldo, Rodriguez, Bale, Benzema, Mandzukic, De Bruyne, Reus, Choupo-Moting, Lewandowski, Muller, Gotze, Irbrahimovic, Modric, Cavani,

This is a list that will change every year based on performance. Why you don't see guys like Kompany on this list. He just didn't play very well this year to warrant it (I may have overlooked 1-2 or put 1-2 on who didn't play very well this year).
Injuries do not take one off the list.

SO no I do not think Dempsey or Jones were as good as those guys listed. Howard this time last year would have most definitely been on this list, and Guzan would have been close. But neither have performed very well this year (at least as good as we expect from them).

You missed that goal Clint scored against Ghana. That was some of the classiest $hit of all time. He's also scored in 3 consecutive World Cups. I get what u mean-- but then you have Phil Jones up there. Guy sucks balls. I won't argue Jermaine Jones either you are right about that. But it's an arbitrary list as you say. Playing for Real Madrid or Barca from the bench is greater than being on Arsenal or Man U as a starter. Point is when people say world class, we are talking about skill and production combined. You can be a world class player on Colo Colo and not make this list. Just being in the champions league doesn't define it well enough for my liking but it's a start. For example, Alexis Sanchez was world class at the hated River Plate, we all knew it, long before he got rubber stamped by the precious Arsene Wenger.

I appreciate the proper thread for the discussion however.

I don't think people would argue Dempsey or Jones were world class. I would put them a notch below though. Jones was a Schalke and Champs League mainstay and Dempsey produced as good as anyone in the EPL. He was even 2nd on the team in goals/ assists per 90 minutes only to Bale his 1 year at Tott. But he obviously wasn't world class if he couldn't crack the starting 11.

I think of world class as in if every soccer league folded and we started from scratch and there would only be 5 teams (or 6 to make it even) who would make the cut. Maybe World Class should be broader (I agree more or less with your list of top teams and if you take the top 10-12 teams in the world thats 150-180 key players that would be considered world class while I consider just the top 75 or so world class). I guess it may be my American view point on things (cant wait to get someonee mad for cross comparing sports) but I think of it this way.

NBA- I can think of about 15 guys Id consider world class, some that have had slight injuries but when healthy they are no doubt world class (Lebron, Curry, Howard, Durant, Westbrook, Paul, Duncan, Griffin, Kobe, Gasol, Harden, Nowitzki, Wade, Wall, Rose) Thats it. There are other all stars (Lillard, Aldridge, Kawhi, Millsap, Noah, Butler, Green, Klay, etc etc) but in my opinion its always like a pyramid so the world class group should be much smaller than the all star (also known as great player group).
Same as in NFL. World Class QBS Peyton, Brady, Rodgers. Thats it to me. Guys like Wilson, Luck, Brees, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Romo are very good. All star caliber but they aren't world class.

So when I think of it I think of every single player is available, and there are no contracts. Only 6 teams in the league. Winner of the league gets $1 Billion dollar (ie its all about this single season, not the next 5 seasons). Who gets selected? Those are my world class guys

MSantoine. Is that 23 man Rosters? I'd say do 22 (knocking off that 3rd GK). Or maybe just doing Those who would be selected on a regular basis 18 players. (starting XI and 7 subs). That gives you 108 players.

Ok lets do this. Lets get 4 other posters who are willing to do this (if you are).
We each take a team and do a "draft" The 108/132 players selected are the "world Class players.

FYI that list would be larger than mine (which has 93).

to get to your 75 number it would be 4 teams of 18 (that gives you 72).
or 5 teams of 15 (starting XI and +4 GK, D, M, FW).
