Question: would Dempsey have done this at Tottenham or Fulham? Doubt it.

Whatever his punishment is, he simply needs to accept it. Can't do things like that to refs otherwise it could happen all the time. An example needs to be set here. Too bad it's dempsey though, wish it was some no name MLS player.

Here's what I remember happening: Mikey had a run of poor performances for the Nats. Quite a few actually. In fact, in those days, most of the time he didn't play well for us and he was relatively unproven at the club level as well. But he played every minute of every game, while all of our other options at CM never really got a game in (Torres, Kljestan, and Edu) or were played on the wing instead (Feilhaber, Holden, and Kljestan the few times he played). Wynalda came out and said what needed to be said, that maybe he didn't deserve to start every game; maybe some other guys should get a chance. So then Mikey flipped out on him and said that he had no right to make that kind of talk, to which Wynalda replied "grow the fuck up."

That's what I remember, too. MB got extra, extra chances in the beginning of his career, before he earned it. (dear internet, please note I did not say he doesn't deserve it now, just that he got way more free chances than just about anybody)

:^) Part of the reason I remember this is that I heckled MB, while he was getting a yellow for a petulant foul, from about the 8th row during a fairly quiet USNT game in LA, and I yelled "Hey Mikey, GROW UP!" to great crowd response. And then Wynalda went and stole my thunder a month or two later.

For those who didn't seem them, those Portland v Seattle Open Cup highlights are nuts. Maybe not the worst I've ever seen, but still......

Seattle suffered what looked to be a soft second yellow on Evans, and what looks to be a very soft red on Azira after a Timber flop. (The overall highlight quality is poor).

It probably didn't help that they suspected the Timbers 2nd goal was offside (it wasn't), and Schmid was also ticked off about a stomp that wasn't called at some point.

After that soft red, Dempsey went bananas. I think he grabbed the game card out of the ref's pocket and tore it in half.

I don't think he would have done it even in a regular MLS game. Let's face it, the US Open cup is not that serious.

I like how all of the games are streamed live on Youtube. I wish I would have recognized this earlier. Oh well, still time to watch extra time in the Cosmos vs NYCFC battle.

And the Cosmos are through on Penalties. NYCFC had a chance to win it on their fifth PK and it was saved.

Just watched the Dempsey clip. My favorite part is when jacks up his shorts in frustration like he's Steven Q. Urkel.

Yup. The revs never take this tourney seriously. Two years ago when they played DCU in the semis, the year DC sucked we still played all our reserves and lost. They treat it 100% as an exhibition tourney. Its too bad as their depth is crazy and there's no reason they couldnt field a better XI.

Yea that's a good point. @thetruth- if the game wasn't important to Seattle- why did Dempsey go 120'?? Played Martins too and he got hurt. Some MLS teams take it serious, others don't. Chicago we also played the starters, and almost lost.

@ham Dempsey didn't come on until the 70th or so minute. Seattle has always been a team that wants to win the Open Cup and also the game was against their biggest rival so of course the game was important to them.

Sure. They've won what, 4 in quick succession??

Dempsey has always been like that- petulant with the refs during games, rolling on the floor cynically, or other things. Why many were surprised he was named captain in the first place. He's a hell of a player and this will boil over. As someone who always has a problem controlling my emotions while playing, I laughed and thought it was funny. As long as it's not against Mexico or in an important game, I'm cool with it. I will say there are plenty of times I've thought Clint was more concerned with the "game within the game" i.e. with the refs or his CB marker from the other team. His focus and sometimes lack thereof will always be a problem for him. The same edge that makes him great can work the other way. Refs by and large here in USA do suck a fat one I will give him that.

This year it's a set bracket final 16 (home team gets a *) :

East:
Red Bulls* v Cosmos - winner gets home game v winner of
Union* v DC united

South:
Fire* v Charlotte independence - winner gets home game v winner of
Orlando* v Crew

Central:
SKC* v Dallas - winner gets home game v winner of
Houston* v Rapids

West:
RSL* v Portland - winner gets home game v winner of
Quakes* v Galaxy

Semifinals:
East* winner v South winner
Central* winner v West winner

My take - Orlando v Columbus has become a rivalry due to their games so far in MLS this year, should be a cracker. Obviously the Cosmos have a chance to do the NYC area double. Out west you gotta like LA traveling up to the Quakes for what's always a good game.

If Cosmos beat Red Bulls the NASL bozo commissioner will talk to every reporter possible saying how great the NASL is. Never mind they went like 1-8 against USL.
