Problem with that is that it makes the D1 teams more likely to win as they set up their season based on playing in D1 not D2.

Once a team earns promotion they can spend more in the summer knowing that will be in D1 next season. Not sure it's fair to ask D2 teams to begin planning their strategy before season to be able to compete with a D1 team I hopes they enter a playoff.

I get both sides but to assume a D2 team isn't as good as a D1 team because of a short playoff isn't fair. Most D2 teams that earn promotion at that time begin to invest in hopes to stay up, they shouldn't have to invest before their D2 season begins.

More or less would make D1 teams even more likely to forever stay up.

Thats not always the case. A lot of times the 2nd division team loads up in an effort/inclination that they will be promoted. See QPR recently. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesnt and then the massive sell off happens but that seems to be more the norm especially in bundesliga and EPL

Toronto FC friendly vs MCFC mid season between two regular season matches. Not new to the league and I get why the league and teams schedule the matches but it proves the league waits for the playoffs.

Please explain. Unclear to me how an effort to increase revenue market the league and draw additional fans proves your point. MLS and teams need to do this to improve viewership and profitability to encourage reinvestment and growth in the league from the owners. It doesn't mean they don't care about the regular season; it's a necessary evil to promote the sport and the league to fans more accustomed and drawn to watching European teams. Clever marketing.

As I said, I fully understand why it's being done. It does prove these matches before and after are an afterthought. Let's see what happens in Europe if a top team plays a friendly midweek for publicity before and after important matches. The outcry from the manager and fans would be loud.

Not so important though in MLS because a loss here or there means little, a streak here or there to bump you over the .500 record mark is all you need.

Again, I fully get the marketing behind it which is why I said in an earlier post I understand the thought process of why they do it. If I was an MLS team and the regular season meant little Id probably make the same decision. If my team was in Europe and in a table structure there would be zero chance I'd allow this to happen as the matches are way more important before and after this friendly.

May warrant a new thread all together but wow this is a great article with some solid stats and quotes from current MLS players:

http://www.espnfc.com/major-league-soccer/19/...

Playoff concepts: like or dislike: 66% like 29% dislike

The quotes offered:

"A single table is more fair. Right now, the West is far stronger, so you almost expect an East team to win the Supporters' Shield because they're playing lesser teams."

"Nothing excites the American sports fan more than playoffs. But I wish the regular season was more important."

"I don't mind playoffs, but I don't like that six teams in each conference make it."

Lots more interesting topics as well.

Side topic: where did rain go? Guess us winning at Germany and Netherlands has resulted in a serious drought. Sad to see someone so reliant on us losing.
