Freiburg's starting GK from last year just transferred to Dortmund. The other two goalies on the roster have almost no game experience. Could be an open competition. Steffen could have a realistic chance to be the #1 goalie in 2.bundes this year

Germans aren't scared to play a young keeper. As I said a few weeks ago- he's on the Tim Howard path. Howard was at Man U at age 23 I believe... Steffen is only 20 right? A few years in Freiburg to work on his skills, an then to a Big Club.

The last SBI podcast had an interview with Steffen and he said, without going into specifics, that he's been told by the coaching staff that he will be getting minutes and there's a plan in place for him, but he didn't give any indication as to whether or not they gave him any details of that plan...but I gotta think that with his good show at the u20 WC, the starting spot is his to lose unless they're bringing in someone during the summer...even if they do bring someone in, Steffen will probably be getting all of the German Cup matches up til the final if they make it that far.

If Cropper really has plateaued and doesn't get better any time soon, Zack could leapfrog over him in the depth chart...

Cropper signed with MK Dons in the Championship. They were in league one (3rd tier) and just got promoted. There current goalie is David Martin, a 29 year old former Liverpool and England youth player who never turned out. Hes been the Dons starter the last 4 years. Hopefully they assume hes not good enough for the Championship level and are looking to upgrade. Hes been with the club since 2010 so not sure of his contract situation. Youd think worse case Cropper is the #2 this year and leg up on being the starter next year. Maybe he and Steffen will both be number one for 2nd division teams by january

I believe that Steffen is already the better keeper and has probably already leapfrogged Cropper.

You could be right but we'll have to see what happens to Cropper in the coming months, who knows, at this point anybody could pick him up.

I agree that Steffen is the much better prospect at this point. But I think if Howard/Guzan/Rimando were all unavailable that Jurgen would bring in Cropper over Steffen. Also Cropper probably has a slight advantage on getting minutes. Freiburg will likely lean on their veterans to push back into top tier where MK Dons just got promoted and realistically dont have a chance. If they avoid the relegation battle Cropper could be in line for some starts in the 2nd half of the year at the latest

Seems like he's starting to prefer Yarbrough as a stop-gap until either Cropper or Steffen is ready to make the leap.

Who knows though, with Cropper getting signed with MK Dons he could very well be seeing significant minutes this season.

One thing to keep in perspective for both.

Howard was 28 when handed 1st choice status with USA. And although he was given the 1st choice at Man U as a 23 year old it wasnt until he was 27 did he become the regular 1st choice at Everton.
Guzan is 30 and just getting a chance to be the #1.(28 until he took over at Villa)

Theres plenty of time for them to grow before we should be relying on them

I'm just perplexed on why so many are low on Cropper. He still was a prospect in SOUTHAMPTON'S ACADEMY. He must have SOME talent for being there. He's still young.

He was a rock against Mexico's U23 team. He got better as the tournament went on in Toulon.

MK Dons could work out. Cropper still has time to get better.

@EKneezy - I don't think it is a case of people being low on Cropper but rather people being high on Steffen

So Guzan has had a great Gold Cup so far in my opinion. Also I thought I read that Givens is gone from Aston Villa. Is he going get the starting job back or is he going to move on?

I either read an article or listened to an interview where it was said that Guzan is expected to be the no. 1 guy at Villa. Given has left and Sherwood is apparently no longer shopping for a keeper.
