So a guy I know (American Football fan) linked me to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULSq7-vJNHo

Saying that it was the best play ever.
Me and some other guys who know soccer (even a little bit) told him he was wrong. We posted several videos of better plays.

He then went on to say that the Bicycle Kick is the most iconic player in Soccer. That all Soccer aficionado's would agree that it is the greatest play in soccer (the bicycle kick in general, not that play).

So the people who actually know soccer laughed at it being the most iconic play. And told him he was wrong.

So my question to you guys is, do you think the Bicycle Kick is the most iconic play in Soccer?

I would think for the genarl sports population (sports fans, not die hard soccer fans) it is the play that gets the oohs and aahs. Its one of the rare highlights that makes ESPN. Its the play that takes the most athletism and is kind of like the ally oop of soccer

Almost exactly what I told him. I just said a 180 dunk instead of Alley Oop. Real Basketball die-hards don't view that as the greatest play, but it gets the highlights and the excitement of the non die-hards.

That highlight was spectacular as it was two bicyle kicks in a row. These kicks in general are Iconic, yes. Best play ever, probably not.

Exactly. I think you could classify each sport in the following:

Baseball Preceived top play- walk off home run and/or grand slam.
Baseball Actual Top play- Probably a triple. Could also say throwing a guy out at the plate from right field.

Footbal Preceived top playl- QB sack and long pass for TD.
Football Actual Top play- I would say on Defense stopping a team on 3rd/4th and short. On offense it would beconverting a 3rd and long.

Hockey Preceived top play- Acrobatic save by goalie.
Hockey actual top play- Killing a long power play or scoring after pulling goalie.

Basketball Preceived top play- acrobatic/"loud" dunks.
Basketball Actual top play- Id say taking a charge (turnover, plus usual negates 2 points, plus gives opponent a foul) or getting an "And 1" basket (takes skill and control to still score while getting whacked and again adds a foul to the opponent).

Soccer Preceived top play- Bike
Soccer actual top play- Id say a corner kick goal. As it takes a great kick, plus multiple players moving to create space, plus a good finish. usually requires an athletic finish (leaping or diving header corners). Could say any free kick goal but corners are most taken and when a goal is scored from a corner it tends to turn momentum.

For me it is the quick counter attack goal with one touch passing and clever runs. It shows defensive as well as offensive ability.

Definitely with you on the one touch passing and clever runs.

I see a Bicycle kick and I'm like that was nice.
I see some slick one touch passing, clever through balls on to a perfectly timed run, a Ronaldinho style 1v1, a BENDING Free Kick that goes around the wall and perfectly top corner of goal and I'm out of my seat excited.

When you pull off a bike in a game the energy from the fans and players and coaches in the stadium just goes through the roof. Most exciting one time volley you can ever do.

To pull off a bike as a cross and then the attacker hitting another bike and scoring from it? What are the damn odds of that happening? It's incredible. You know how many times I see a nice build up and then a through ball for a goal? Plenty.

I am going with this play.

There was another video on the side of that ultimate last minute goals and 2 American players were in it for the winners. Pretty awesome.

But speaking of Bicycle kicks they are pretty hard to pull off.

Peter Crouch has a sick bicycle as his best highlight ever...Peter Crouch...If he can do one so pretty...they lose a lot of impressiveness to me...
It would be like seeing a goofy 6' white kid doing a 180 dunk.

I like #10 plays, Zidane, Pirlo....

In basketball, someone like Jason Kidd, whose stat line is in single digits, but, just ask Dirk Nowtizski who was the difference maker and he will point to JKidd
