Mexico has better individual players but they can never seem to m to make it all happen as a team. USA has been better as of late because we're a much better "team"
If you don't love it, leave it, USA #1

US is was better till this cup. US and jk'S tactics were horrible and his selection was a bit off. Mexico was one if the top 4 teams that actually played soccer. Chile, Germany, and Colombia were the others. I think they would have made the finals if they had not been eliminated by Holland. We don't have a player of Vela's caliber. We had a Donovan. Not anymore. Then they have Herrera. Those two players, Vela especially are in a different level. Maybe if Bradley had stayed in Europe, he could have been there but he isn't. And I hate Mexico. I hate that Donovan is gone. That Dempsey is almost out. Glad that Bradley still has around 6-8 years but who else can we count on? Jones is almost out too. Jozy is inconsistent but hopefully this year he turns it around but, how many times have i or we wished for that? I honestly dont see Mix stepping it up yet. Fabjo is good but doesn't have his position set. These friendlies are important as hell. hopefully jk takes a good roster.

Yeah, I think this is about right. I can't fault anyone for claiming that the US is better because the results for the last 15 years do clearly indicate this is the case. But if you want to throw out the numbers and just believe your eyes, Mehico was a better team at the last WC.

My only issue with this is that Mexico would have made the finals. They still had Argentina and Costa Rica to beat.

What makes a better team? Itlay has won numerous WC's on the back of strong defense that bunkered then the team counter attacked. There isn't one way to play the game.

Mexico had a good WC, but so did the states. Do you really think Mexico would have fared better going against the teams the USA did? Because I don't.

The US had arguably one of the hardest groups and then had probably the most difficult second round opponent.

I would strongly like to add that Italy is really like the Spurs. Yes against France they countered and bunkered, but in their opener against Ghana they just played lightning quick. So quick that I was worried we were going to get exposed by the quickness of play, but against us, they were more methodical... which was interesting to say the least... this is of course in 06.

I know Spain had a dedicated style, the only horse I have is with the US, but I always give Italy their props, they outpossessed Spain in the Euro finals in 10, granted Spain clobbered them, esp in the last game, but they can play any style they want, usually, if the personnel permits, they're just a huge country and unlike Brazil, they have an incredible library of different styles tactics, different mindsets that they implement, and a dedication to it, not just this fleeting ideal of pretty soccer like Joga Bonito, which doesn't have substantive qualities to it. They're not just cantenaccio.

Italy is what I feel the US can become in 20 years, athletically superb, tactically superb, technically deft.

@2tone- I think it was the difference in USA v Belgium, and Mexico v holland. They put in a commanding performance the first 60 minutes and then folded. We never controlled the game against Belgium. But head to head- we have the Mexicans number. It's their play against the rest of the world that is better.

I tend to agree with you on this. The US will play great during qualifying then play scared once the tourney starts. I think we sometimes have that inferiority complex and it shows when were on the big stage. Mexico play with swagger and when it comes to the eye test, Mexico look better.

If we can upgrade at winger we should be solid. Both Bedoya and Zusi were bad against Belgium. Zusi in particular had his worst game in a USMNT jersey that game. You need Wingers that are able to not only go at player but hold the ball up and bring in other teammates.

This is me speculating, but I think the USA has a much better tournament stylistic wise if Altidore never goes down injured. Altidore was flying against Ghana before he got that hamstring injury.

Time will tell but I'm very excited about Jordan Morris, Darlington Nagbe, and possibly even Rubio Rubin, on the wings.

Add in Khiry Shelton and I think the USMNT even in this WC cycle will have more options soon.

Man I really wished Morris would have decided to come out of college and signed with the Sounders this year.

I understand that's hard to leave a place like Stanford, but I think he is ready to not only contribute for the Sounders, but be a starter.

I agree about Nagbe. I think he will definitely add that spark and creativity the USMNT is still missing from the wings.

Zardes played out wide against Panama and looked great. I will gladly give him another go out wide irrespective of his regular position.
