5 Year contract. ESPN made it sound like it was a loan at first buts officially a full transfer.

Seems like a permanent transfer was desired and Prem clubs weren't meeting the asking price from Spurs. Promotion battle represents a different challenge than his relegation fight at Sunderland but if he can help Newcastle get promoted and get consistent minutes during this then it seems like an alright move.

Newcastle has shown a real desire to bounce back from their relegation last season. They've kept most of the talent that they had, kept their coach, and have purchased Yedlin to a long term contract. He has the talent, that once he settles in, he should be a 90 minute player week in, week out. If he helps them get promoted back to the EPL he should be well suited to grow and advance with the team over the next couple season.
Overall a good decision/choice. After last year's improvement he's shown he's good enough for low level EPL and takes coaching well. This season should see him improve technically & tactically and raise his level of play overall.

They've kept a few players and brought in a few more but losing Townsend, Wijnaldum, Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Janmaat, Tim Krul (loan to Ajax) and Papiss Cisse. I know Rafa is a good manager but that is a lot of talent lost. I'm not so sure they will be right back up like everyone seems to think.

It's a lot of talent lost, but it was talent that did not play well together and got them relegated. They will be back up, and it looks like Rafa is building a team rather than buying mercenaries and trying to get them to play well together. If he succeeds their chances of staying up after promotion will be much improved.

Yedlin played a bit in his newcastle debut; came on as a 88' min sub

Came on in the 73rd for Gouffran, scored in the 90th. I didn't see the game, but I'm assuming he was brought on as a wide midfielder.

Here we all thought Deandre would walk right in to the starting RB spot after Janmaat was sold. Newcastle playing their 8th game in the championship today, and he hasn't started one of them.

It may be Newcastle's 8th game today, but it is only the 4th since Yedlin signed with the club. The 1st match was days after he signed, the 2nd he made a cameo appearance, 3rd he came in with 20 some minutes remaining in the game.
Most of use knew that it would take a bit of time for him to adjust to his new teammates and the way the coach wants to play. It took a bit of time for him to earn the managers trust last year. I expect he'll need at least a little time to do it again with his new manager.
So long as his minutes continue to grow I don't have any serious concerns.

Because he had no pre season with newcastle. European teams always hit on that as a big reason of less minutes

It would be an admsghs comment clone if I said "he shouldn't be anywhere near the USMNT. We should actually call in Dolo before we call in Yedlin."

I was pointing out that the majority of us thought he wouldn't have any trouble slotting right in to the starting XI. I didn't say he's never going to crack the XI.

Nice try, though!
