I think it was that one. It was the only game he played his position. Might have been after 2010.

I know Alvardo has wavered a bit but I thought his last statemenet was he was holding out and wanted to play for Mexico over USA.

Ill throw a dark horse of Andrew Farrell- He wass dynamite last year and a good start to this season, coupled with Fab's continued bench warming and Yedlin possible bench warming could shoot him up the rungs quickly. he also posses the versitility (RB/CB) that JK loves

Brian Sciaretta recently did an article on him and he stated he would prefer a USMNT call. That supposed quote by him waiting for Mexico was bogus by the Mexican reporter.

Yeah, I have always been a Torres fan, but a guy like him was always going to be a tough fit for a US team. It's just not the way we play. And, yes, definitely a CM.

Klinsmann never seemed clear on how best to use him (hence the left back experiment against Antigua and Barbuda in the first game of the last qualifying cycle).

Torres was used at LB in the game against A&B because of injury and illness to the LB's that JK had in camp (Fabian & Castillo). JK could have brought in another back...which many of us fans wanted him to do (Lichaj) as there was time....but chose to use Torres instead.

I like Torres and think he should be given chances over the next couple of years, but he's a player that will have a lot of competition to deal with to stake a claim of consistently being with the USMNT. Over the next 3 years he'll be competing with....
Jones & Beckerman (2 more years), Cameron, Bradley, Williams, Diskerud, Edu, Powers....Than later in the cycle Hyndman, Trapp, Kitchen, Stanko, Canouse, & Senora.

When JK stops using Jones, Beckerman, Cameron, & Edu will likely determine if/when Torres is given another shot.

I know exactly which game you are referring to.

It was a hot, humid night in San Jose on the third of June in 2009. Perhaps hearing about Barcelona's success on the TV, Coach Bob decided to try out a 4-3-3 against the Ticos. And he decided to give J.F. Torres a shot. This was in the era when Michael Bradley was still a mediocre Bundesliga holding midfielder but handed the keys to the NT. He played every minute of every game (more than any other field player) as a CM with few defensive responsibilities and nearly unlimited creative and positional freedom. The other CM's were never really given a chance (Edu, Torres) or played out of position (Feilhaber, Holden, and Kljestan all would be used almost exclusively on the wing). But Torres had been in good form for his club for quite some time despite never getting any attention from the national team, but on this day Torres was finally given the start alongside Bradley and Mastroeni in a new formation for the USNT.

It was an utterly disasterous performance as everyone in a US shirt looked completely clueless as to what they were supposed to do. The best player on our side by far, however, was Torres, who showed great poise on the ball. The only blip in his performance was that one of the goals was partially his fault, although Mastroeni was much more to blame. Coach Bob, however, decided to sub out Torres and keep the aging Mastroeni in. Unsurprisingly, Pablo was completely gassed in the second half and was a total liability. The penalty we scored at the end did not tell the full story of the 3-1 scoreline. Torres wasn't used again until right before the 2010 World Cup, and looked completely out of sync with his teammates in the Slovenia game, as well as completely out of place as a DM covering for Bradley. And the rest is history.

Perhaps, but Klinsmann is trying to change things this cycle and has been using Mix as a CM...so why not Torres? I'm not holding my breath though.
